What are the responsibilities and job description for the Seeking caregiver/ mentor for client with complex developmental disabilities position at Miller Family Home?
Experience is required: we seek a candidate who has worked with people with complex developmental disabilities. The client chooses to work with people who are older than her (33 or older), who does not smoke, and is not allergic to cats.
This is a part-time job (4-12 hours per week) working with a client who is a high-functioning neurologically divergent 31-year old with mental health challenges, living independently as part of the Self-Direction Program of Office of People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD). You would join a small skilled team, each of whom are scheduled for anywhere between one to three regular 4-hour shifts (9 AM-1 PM and 4 PM-8 PM, Monday-Sunday), with flexibility to accommodate your schedule.
Care-giving, mental health, special education, psychology, healing arts, arts and education, and similar backgrounds, are a plus. Awareness of how to de-escalate situations that arise and learn how to recognize behavioral situations that might be challenging are critical.
This is an opportunity to work one-on-one to make a difference in a disabled person's life! Dependability, patience, good communication and open-mindedness are essential. The client loves to live independently, self-advocates well, and likes to be active and engaged in the community. The goal is to support their goal of living and caring for themselves on their own. Activities include supporting independent life skills in the home, calming activities, self-care including meals, and making sure the two cats and her home are cared for. In the community, activities include exploring social, educational and healthy opportunities around the region, and driving for errands, outings, and field trips.
