Position Summary
The Construction Accountant is responsible for managing and overseeing the financial operations specific to construction projects. This role ensures accurate job costing, contract compliance, revenue recognition, and financial reporting while supporting project managers and company leadership with timely and reliable financial data.
Key Responsibilities
Job Cost Accounting
- Maintain and monitor job cost ledgers for multiple active construction projects
- Review and allocate labor, materials, subcontractor, and equipment costs accurately
- Analyze cost variances and report discrepancies to project management
- Ensure proper coding of expenses to jobs and cost categories
Accounts Payable & Subcontractor Management
- Process vendor and subcontractor invoices with proper approvals
- Track subcontractor compliance documents (W-9s, COIs, lien waivers)
- Issue joint checks as required
- Manage subcontractor retainage and release upon project completion
Accounts Receivable & Progress Billing
- Prepare and submit owner billings, including AIA progress billing
- Track retainage receivable
- Monitor collections and follow up on outstanding invoices
- Reconcile billed vs. earned revenue
Work-in-Progress (WIP) Reporting
- Prepare monthly WIP schedules
- Calculate percentage of completion revenue recognition
- Analyze over/under billings
- Assist in forecasting project profitability
Payroll & Labor Costing
- Review and allocate payroll to appropriate jobs and cost codes
- Ensure compliance with certified payroll requirements (if applicable)
- Track labor burden and fringe benefits
General Ledger & Financial Reporting
- Prepare journal entries and monthly account reconciliations
- Assist in month-end and year-end close
- Support preparation of financial statements
- Maintain fixed asset schedules
Compliance & Audit Support
- Ensure compliance with contract terms and accounting standards
- Support internal and external audits
- Assist with tax documentation and reporting
- Maintain organized project financial documentation
Qualifications
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
- 3 years of accounting experience (construction industry preferred)
- Strong understanding of job costing and percentage-of-completion accounting
- Experience with construction accounting software (e.g., Sage, QuickBooks, Procore)
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel
- Strong analytical and organizational skills
- Detail-oriented with ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
- Must live within driving distance of Crown Point, IN.
Preferred Skills
- Knowledge of AIA billing procedures
- Understanding of lien laws and retainage requirements
- Experience with multi-entity or multi-project environments
