TITLE:
Pre-K Assistant REVISED 04/22/26

LOCATION: Asbury Elementary School / McDowell High School - North APPROVED 04/27/26

RATE: $20.53/hr (Based on years in PSERS)

2026 - 2027 School Year


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of a current and valid CDA Certificate, associate degree, or bachelors degree required.
  • Experience working with preschool / elementary children, required.
  • Experience working with students with special needs, preferred.
  • Experience with the implementation of behavior plans, preferred.
  • Such alternative to the above as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.


REPORTS TO:
Building Principal


JOB GOAL:
To ensure the safety, security, and supervision of children at all times as well as meeting the educational needs of students participating in the MTSD Pre-K program.


PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Assist the teacher in providing daily instruction to students. Work with students individually or with small group instruction.
  • Assist students in understanding and comprehension of classroom assignments, explain errors and answer questions to reinforce the main lesson plans, assist students with problem-solving tasks, and all other aspects of the program.
  • Confer with and take direction from Teachers, EI Consultants, and Administrators concerning programs and materials to meet the needs of the students.
  • Assist in the management and shaping of student behavior through the use of positive behavior management and reinforcement strategies.
  • Maintain order and direct group activities of students as assigned; monitor, observe, and control behavior of students.
  • Report progress and concerns regarding student performance and behavior to the teacher; supervise students while the teacher is temporarily out of the classroom.
  • Prepare instructional materials as directed by the teacher.
  • Help maintain records for students.
  • Assure the health and safety of students by following health and safety practices and procedures; assist students with general first aid and medical needs; assist students in emergency and fire drill procedures.
  • Assist in maintaining a clean and orderly learning environment.
  • Comply with Pre-K Counts regulations (e.g., professional development requirements and early learning environment expectations).
  • Accompany teachers and students on field trips and other student-related extra-curricular activities as assigned.
  • Participate in staff meetings and in-service training programs as assigned.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Ability to sit, talk, and hear.
  • Ability to stand, walk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and move quickly when necessary to promote student learning and/or safety.
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Over 50 pounds requires assistance. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.


SENSORY ABILITY:

  • Ability to speak clearly and distinctly.
  • Auditory acuity to be able to use telephone.
  • Visual acuity to read correspondence and computer screen.

  • Ability to work as a member of a team.
  • Must be courteous.
  • Must be cooperative, congenial, and service-oriented, and promote these qualities in the building.

  • Ability to exercise good judgment in prioritizing tasks and problem-solving.
  • Ability to use correct grammar, sentence structure, and spelling.
  • Ability to communicate effectively at all organizational levels.
