Millbrook School seeks a visual arts teacher as a leave replacement for the first semester (September - December) of the 2026-2027 academic year. This teacher would be the master teacher in Millbrook’s sequence of drawing, painting, and mixed media courses, culminating in an honors studio course. Candidates should be knowledgeable about both contemporary art and art history. Three or more years of previous teaching experience is preferred. This teacher will steward two studio art spaces, a traditional drawing classroom and Millbrook’s senior studios. These individual studio spaces are home to Millbrook’s most advanced drawing and painting students. Drawing and painting is a flourishing program at Millbrook that helps students discover and develop a personal aesthetic.

The teacher will join a vibrant, highly collaborative arts department at the Holbrook Arts Center, where all visual and performing arts are brought together under one roof.

A bachelor’s degree in visual arts or a related field and strong communication skills are required. Coaching & teaching experience are preferred. In addition to teaching four sections (or the equivalent), this position may include coaching or supervising an afternoon program (or the equivalent). Full-time faculty members are also expected to participate in community service, evening responsibilities, activities, assemblies, and attend required meetings and workshops. The primary goal of a teaching faculty member is to ensure that each student reaches their full potential. Housing may be provided and would entail residential life duties.

The annual salary range for this teaching position is $41,000 - $90,000. When determining placement in the salary range, Millbrook School considers total teaching experience, number of years working at Millbrook School, and other factors permitted by law.

SUMMARY OF POSITION

At Millbrook School, we seek educators who value creating inclusive classrooms and curricula and who are committed to their continued growth. The primary goal of a teaching faculty member is to ensure that each student reaches their full potential. We require our teachers to hold a bachelor’s degree in the subject they teach or a related field, and to have strong communication skills; we prefer teachers with teaching and coaching experience. A teaching faculty position consists of teaching four sections (or the equivalent), coaching or supervising an afternoon program for two out of three seasons, and serving as an advisor for up to six students. Full-time faculty members are also expected to participate in community service, evening responsibilities, activities, assemblies, and attend required meetings and workshops. Housing may be provided and would entail residential life duties. Energy for adolescents, adaptability, humor, and integrity are the hallmarks of Millbrook's faculty.

SALARY RANGE

Salary range for a teaching faculty position is $41,000 - $90,000. When determining placement in the salary range, Millbrook School considers total teaching experience, years of service at Millbrook School, and other factors permitted by law.

RESPONSIBILITIES & EXPECTATIONS FOR FULL-TIME FACULTY MEMBERS -- These may be adjusted depending upon the role.

  • Teaching: Teach four sections of a subject (or the equivalent)
  • Coaching: Coach two seasons (or the equivalent)
  • Community Service: Advise or assist with community service.
  • Assemblies: Attend assemblies on designated mornings throughout the school year.
  • Evening Responsibility: Faculty who live in school-provided housing will have an evening responsibility.
  • Activities: All faculty support our weekend programming on their assigned weekends.
  • Advising: All faculty are expected to have between one and six advisees per year, to communicate regularly with advisees’ families, and to write three advisor letters for each over the course of the year. The advisor is the primary resource for a student and their parents or guardians, acts as a mentor, and shepherds the student’s growth over their time at Millbrook. Advisors meet weekly with advisees on Tuesdays during alternating seated lunches and meeting times, and schedule additional time as needed. Advisors must maintain regular contact with parents or guardians and keep them informed of their child’s progress. Advisors should also communicate proactively with colleagues about their advisee.
  • Miscellaneous: Share in all other boarding school responsibilities, including office hours, assembly, formal dinner, department meetings, faculty meetings, orientation programs, award assemblies, trustee and parent weekends, workshops, and additional duties as determined. All faculty are also expected to assist with opening days, winter weekend, and commencement weekend.

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in the subject being taught or a related field.
  • Coaching and teaching experience preferred.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Must have strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Must have strong computer skills.
  • Faculty members must have a clean & valid driver’s license.

SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS / ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
  • Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action.
  • Must have the ability to work harmoniously and effectively with others.
  • Must be able to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Must have patience, tact, and enthusiasm when dealing with personnel, students, and families.
  • Must be proficient in the composition of written communication.

PHYSICAL & SENSORY REQUIREMENTS (with or without the aid of a mechanical device)

  • Must function independently and be able to move intermittently throughout the workday.
  • Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position.
  • Must possess sight/hearing senses or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately so that the requirements of this position can be fully met.
  • Must be able to work in person, on campus.
  • Must be flexible and willing to adapt to new technology, teaching methods and/or schedules.
  • Must be able to physically teach, coach, advise, attend meetings & be an active member of residential life.
  • Must be able to lift, push, pull, and move equipment, supplies, etc., without restrictions.
  • If coaching, must be willing & able to travel & attend sporting events on nights and weekends.
  • Faculty members must be able to operate a motor vehicle.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Typical office and classroom conditions.
  • Involved in residential life in the dining hall, chapel and dorms.
  • Outdoor weather and/or indoor conditions while coaching.
  • Bursts of heavy traffic, congestion, and teenage exuberance throughout the day.
