What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lower School Teacher (K-4) position at Mill Springs Academy?

The teacher will provide opportunities for maximum student development and growth through developmentally appropriate learning experiences. The teacher will design and implement a wide variety of instructional strategies that will accommodate various abilities and skills in the school curriculum. This is a full-time teaching position. After school responsibilities are available.


Responsibilities


Track student performance; evaluate programs and student progress (conferences, written evaluation, and written daily correspondence).

Effectively adapt teaching methods, instructional materials, and learning opportunities to meet students' varying needs and interests.

Instruct and encourage individual students; establish goals for individualized students and small groups.

Provide a classroom space that is well organized, structured and colorful with classroom expectations posted.

Implement and model the school’s social curriculum (Levels System/Community Structure) with a strong emphasis on community.

Assess student progress through observations, assignments, and assessments, and communicate and collaborate with parents, other teachers, counselors, and administrators regarding students' progress.

Maintain accurate and complete student records.

Attend professional meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops to maintain and improve professional competence.

Manage the class and ensure engagement and discipline.

Attend staff meetings and serve on committees as required.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities


●        Bachelor’s degree (preferably a Masters); a minimum of 3 years teaching experience 

●        Special Education degree or endorsement is also a plus

●        Experience with multi-sensory instruction strategies

●        Experience teaching students with learning differences and an understanding of different learning styles and skill levels 

Experience with teaching writing to students with learning differences

●        Highly creative, flexible, innovative teaching style that engages all types of learners 

●        Must be a team player and able to build positive working relationships with colleagues

●        Ability to develop positive rapport with students

●        Superior communication skills (both written and oral) and communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with students, parents, and other professionals regularly

●        Demonstrate computer literacy and proficiency (e.g., word processing, spreadsheets, email, Internet, presentation software, and online grade book programs).  Experience with Smart Board and FACTS (RenWeb or another learning management system) technology; must have working knowledge of Google Classroom and its applications (Documents, Slides, Sites, etc.)

 


Essential Functions:

Instructing — Teaching others how to do something. 

Establish and enforce rules for behavior and procedures for maintaining order among the students for whom they are responsible.

Observe and evaluate students' performance, behavior, social development, and physical health.

Prepare materials and classrooms for class activities.

Adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students' varying needs and interests.

Plan and conduct activities for a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and work time that provides students with opportunities to observe, question, and investigate.

Instruct students individually and in groups, using various teaching methods such as lectures, discussions, and demonstrations.

Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects and communicate those objectives to students.

Assign and grade classwork and homework.

Read books to entire classes or small groups.

Prepare, administer, and grade tests and assignments to evaluate students' progress.

Conduct parent/ guardian conferences as needed.

Attending division and school-wide faculty meetings.

Attending Professional development training as directed by the supervisor.

 


Work Environment:


This job is performed inside, the noise level can be soft to loud. Work for this position will take place primarily in a classroom. While performing the duties of this job, the employee could be required to sit, stand, stoop, kneel, walk, talk, read, and hear. The employee could be required to use hands to write, type, finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls, and reach with hands and arms. The employee may occasionally lift and /or move up to 25 pounds.
