What are the responsibilities and job description for the Transfer Press Operator for Milan Stamping - 2nd Shift position at Milan Metal Systems?
At Milan Metal Systems, our Press Room Operators manufacture stampings and weldings to customer specifications in accordance with safety, quality, and productivity standards. Press operators are key members of the production team.
The goal for each operator is to grow in the ability to produce quality metal stampings on as many presses as possible.
- Develop the ability to produce consistent, high-quality stampings across a variety of presses
- Meet established productivity, efficiency, and quality standards
- Build strong technical knowledge of the metal forming process
- Demonstrate flexibility by learning and operating multiple machines and processes
- Runs press with minimal supervision while maintaining quality standards
- Proactively identifies defects before they reach downstream operations
- Keeps work area clean and audit-ready throughout the shift (not just at end)
- Accurately records data with no missing or incorrect entries
- Supports team flow by communicating issues early and clearly
REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to come to work on a regular basis: 3:30 pm - 12:00 noon (Overtime as necessary; may include weekends)
Education: A high school education is the minimal level of formal education (through a diploma or G.E.D.).
Experience: While previous experience working in a factory is desirable, it is not required.
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: Knowledge of basic math is required. Must have mechanical aptitude and manual dexterity. Must be able to read and write. It is necessary to use measuring instruments to perform quality procedures. In some situations the operator has to be able to use micrometers, calipers and dial indicators. Must be able to follow verbal instructions accurately.
Physical: Required activities involve standing or sitting for long hours. Must be able to withstand stress of repetitive motion activity for reasonable lengths of time. Good vision, hearing, and the ability to walk, squat, and bend over are necessary. May have to exercise lifting capability up to 30 lbs on a regular basis.
Mental: Must have willingness to discover potential problems before they cause the production of defective materials. Problem solving ability is a plus. Ability to work cooperatively with a team orientation is most helpful.
Working Conditions: A forty hour work week is standard. At times it is necessary to work more than the usual 8-hour shift and forty-hour week. There must be tolerance for conditions that allow for the presence of some welding smoke and noise levels that are not in excess of OSHA mandated limits.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Feedline – reel, straighter, feeder (coil feed into the press) set ups and adjustments
- Press – operator and programming progressive and transfer dies and operating the press
- Transfer System – programming and set up of die transfer
- 3000-5000 Ton Press
Technical Skills & Equipment Operation
- Demonstrates working knowledge of press operations and feeder line components.
- Safely operates single-hit presses in accordance with standard procedures.
- Mixes drawing oils and identifies correct coatings for various jobs and materials.
Quality & Inspection
- Understands quality requirements and performs sorting, rework, and tagging as needed.
- Identifies defective stampings (e.g., burrs, slug marks, cracks) and performs appropriate repair or salvage actions.
- Records data on control charts and interprets results to ensure process stability and product quality.
Production Tracking & Documentation
- Accurately records production and downtime data using the HP system or production job tickets.
- Follows lot control procedures, including:
- Identifying all process tags
- Recognizing incorrect or missing information
- Completing required tag documentation accurately
Safety & Housekeeping
- Maintains a clean and organized work area by practicing strong housekeeping standards.
- Removes scrap in a safe manner and supports proper placement of scrap and finished material containers in coordination with the material handler.
Training & Development Goals
The long-term goal for Press Operators is to grow beyond basic operation and develop into highly skilled, well-rounded contributors. This includes:
- Becoming proficient in both press operation and feeder line operation
- Understanding how to properly run, monitor, and troubleshoot feed systems
- Gaining the knowledge and ability to assist with die setup and auxiliary equipment
- Supporting overall production flow by anticipating issues and contributing to solutions
