Location: Skokie, Illinois

About Midwest Tropical

Midwest Tropical is a leading custom design and fabrication company specializing in architectural water features, water walls, waterfalls, fountains, bubble walls, aquariums, and other one-of-a-kind installations.

We work on highly customized projects for luxury residential, commercial, hospitality, automotive, entertainment, and architectural clients throughout the United States.

Our projects are not off-the-shelf products. Every project requires careful planning, engineering coordination, detailed drawings, fabrication, and field installation.

We are looking for a Project Manager / CAD Draftsman who can help take projects from concept through fabrication and installation.

About the Position

This is a hands-on position for someone who enjoys both technical design and project management.

You will work directly with customers, architects, designers, engineers, fabricators, installers, and our internal team to turn concepts into completed projects.

The ideal candidate is someone who can look at a project and understand both how it should be drawn and how it needs to be built.

Responsibilities

  • Manage multiple custom projects from initial design through installation
  • Create and modify detailed 2D and 3D CAD drawings
  • Develop fabrication, shop, installation, and construction drawings
  • Interpret architectural plans and project specifications
  • Coordinate dimensions, materials, plumbing, pumps, electrical requirements, structural components, and other project details
  • Work with architects, interior designers, contractors, engineers, and customers
  • Obtain project information and clarify design requirements
  • Prepare drawings and documentation for fabrication
  • Coordinate with our fabrication team to ensure drawings accurately reflect how projects will be built
  • Track project schedules, materials, deadlines, and deliverables
  • Communicate with vendors and subcontractors
  • Review projects during fabrication and installation and resolve design issues
  • Participate in site visits and field measurements when necessary
  • Identify potential problems before they become costly fabrication or installation issues
  • Help develop creative solutions for challenging custom projects

What We're Looking ForRequired

  • Strong experience with AutoCAD
  • Ability to read and understand architectural and construction drawings
  • Strong understanding of dimensions, materials, fabrication, and construction
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Ability to visualize how a drawing will translate into a physical finished product
  • Ability to work independently and take ownership of projects

Preferred

Experience with any of the following is a major plus:

  • 3D CAD modeling
  • SolidWorks
  • Revit
  • SketchUp
  • Architectural drafting
  • Mechanical drafting
  • Structural detailing
  • Plumbing systems
  • Water features or fountains
  • Stainless steel fabrication
  • Glass fabrication
  • Acrylic fabrication
  • Pumps and water circulation systems
  • Electrical systems
  • Construction project management
  • Custom fabrication
  • Commercial construction
  • Hospitality or luxury residential construction

The Ideal Candidate

We're looking for more than someone who can simply produce CAD drawings.

The ideal person is a problem solver who can take a complicated custom project, understand what needs to happen, create accurate drawings, communicate with everyone involved, and help get the project successfully built.

You should be comfortable asking questions, catching mistakes, making decisions, and taking ownership.

Our projects are highly customized, so creativity and common sense are extremely valuable.

If you see something on a drawing that won't work in the real world, we want you to speak up and figure out a better solution.
