Organ Procurement Coordinator - Westwood

Responsible for the evaluation, management, and coordination of organ donor activities to maximize organ placement and recovery in accordance with the Mission of the organization.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

DONOR COORDINATION

1. There are two schedule options available for the Organ Procurement Coordinator (OPC) role:
   1. On-Call Organ Procurement Coordinator (OPC)
      1. Maintains an on-call schedule of approximately 12–15 24-hour call shifts per month (approximately 50% on-call coverage).
      2. In addition to on-call responsibilities, must be able to work an average of 16 hours per week in the MTN office completing follow-up, administrative, and coordination activities.
   2. Shifted Organ Procurement Coordinator (OPC)
      1. Works a minimum of 36 hours per week.
      2. Must be able to work three (3) scheduled 12-hour shifts per week.
2. Evaluates medical suitability of potential organ donors, utilizing information from medical records, history and physical examination, and current health status.
3. Professionally collaborates with hospital’s medical staff to assess the clinical status of the potential organ and/or tissue donor and direct the clinical management of the authorized organ and/or tissue donor.
4. Competently manages clinical hemodynamic stability of the donor patient and appropriately seeks consultation with AOC/Intensivist on call/Medical Director.
5. Requests and interprets laboratory and diagnostic tests needed for evaluation of suitability and clinical management of potential organ and/or tissue donors.
6. Ability to utilize Point of Care testing for performing laboratory testing on donor patients.
7. Independently operates and trouble shoots all clinical equipment in MTN’s Donor Care Unit (DCU), including ventilators, monitors, IV pumps, X-ray, CT machine including IV contrast, etc.
8. When caring for donor patients in the DCU, responsible for all aspects of donor care, including ventilator management, medication calculation and preparation, IV fluid and medication administration, blood administration, turning, bathing and other standard ICU patient care.
9. Performs donor patient care procedures including art line insertion and Central line insertion utilizing sterile and clean techniques.
10. May perform additional procedures such as bronchoscopy after competence established.
11. Timely and accurately documents all donor management and procedures in True North and Donor Net
12. Works closely with the Hospital and Family Services Coordinator in offering potential donor families the option of donation in an appropriate and sensitive manner. 
13. Provides informed authorization in accordance with state law and established MTN policies and procedures.
14. Conducts all aspects of the donation process in compliance with established federal and state laws, AOPO and AATB standards, UNOS and FDA guidelines, CDC and MTN policies.
15. Collaborates with the Donation Services Department staff to facilitate all aspects of the organ/tissue donation process, to include communications regarding organ/tissue suitability.
16. Leads coordination of transportation and other logistics for local and outside recovery programs, in preparation for operative phase of recovery.
17. Coordinates with MTN Preservation Specialists to facilitate all aspects of the organ/tissue recovery process.
18. Maintains donor stability in the OR while serving as the Head of Bed (HOB) specialist.

HEAD OF BED SPECIALIST

1. Responsible for the clinical management and stabilization of the donor patient throughout the recovery procedure.
2. Provides respiratory and hemodynamic support utilizing MTN donor management guidelines, while collaborating with recovery surgeons present for the organ recovery.

ADMINISTRATIVE

1. Completes donor case follow-up and required quality assurance responsibilities in a timely and accurate manner.
2. Maintains compliance with documentation practices and MTN Policies and Procedures.
3. Provides clinical education in conjunction with Hospital Services personnel as necessary.

REFERRAL AND EMR REVIEW

1. Serves as a back-up resource to screen organ referral calls from referring hospitals to evaluate potential donors, answer questions, and develop a plan for action with the Administrator on Call (AOC).
2. Ability to access the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and obtain additional information to determine donor suitability.
3. Serves as a back-up resource by collaborating with the AOC to determine a plan of action for following potential donor cases, deferral of non-eligible donor referrals or activation of the Family Services Coordinator for offering potential donor families the option of donation in an appropriate and sensitive manner.

QUALIFICATIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

1. Undergraduate degree in health sciences or equivalent field of study and professional clinical work experience required. NREMT-P Certification with four years of Clinical OPO experience, RRT licensure with minimum of six years critical care experience or RN licensure with minimum of four years critical care experience required.
2. Ability to work the required minimum hours per week and participate in 24-hour on-call or assigned 12 hr. shift schedule.  Must be available on non-call days during normal business hours as applicable.  Required to work and remain standing for extended periods of time with few breaks.
3. Must maintain a valid driver’s license in accordance with MTN motor vehicle policy.  Must have reliable personal automobile transportation to be used with company reimbursement using IRS guidelines.  Requires the ability to travel within the service area by ground or air and be physically present onsite at all hospitals within MTN’s Donation Service Area (DSA).
4. Excellent organization and time management skills; ability to function independently and collaboratively; demonstrated problem-solving and creative thinking skills and well-developed personal stress management skills.
5. Effective written and verbal communication skills; ability to speak and communicate clearly and accurately to convey information to MTN stakeholders in person or by phone; written documentation of relevant information in a professional manner.
6. Ability to lift 50 pounds and transfer short distances.
7. Possess ability to operate telephones, computers and surgical equipment.
8. OSHA Category I – Exposed regularly to bloodborne pathogens while performing assigned job duties.  Bloodborne pathogens protection is required.
9. Home internet and wireless phone access may be required.
