What are the responsibilities and job description for the HVAC Service Manager position at Midwest Mechanical?
Read this first
This is not an entry-level posting and it is not a "we'll train the right person" posting. We need someone who has already run an HVAC service department and can prove it. If your management experience is "I was the senior tech and people asked me questions," this is not your job. If you've owned a service board, a team of techs, and a P&L number, keep reading.
Who we are
Midwest Mechanical is an HVAC, plumbing, and electrical company in Wichita, 38 employees, 28 trucks, in business for decades and growing fast. We run on ServiceTitan and we take it seriously: dispatch, pricebook, memberships, job costing, reporting. We just brought on a general manager and significant new construction volume. The service department needs its own leader.
What you'll own
The HVAC service department, end to end:
- Service techs: scheduling, performance, training, accountability
- The dispatch board and daily capacity
- The on-call rotation and after-hours emergency response, including making sure every emergency call is acknowledged and run without ownership getting involved
- Service KPIs: response times, callback rate, ticket size, membership conversion, tech efficiency
- Data quality on service jobs: equipment records, serial numbers, job notes, closed jobs
- Escalations: angry customers and problem jobs stop at your desk, not the owner's
What success looks like
Emergency calls answered every time. Callbacks trending down. Techs hitting standards without being chased. The owner finding out about problems from your weekly report, not from customers.
What you need
- 3 years managing an HVAC service department (managing people, not just working service)
- Strong ServiceTitan experience, or deep experience on a comparable platform and the ability to prove you can learn ours fast
- Ability to hold techs accountable to response times, quality, and documentation
- Enough technical depth that techs can't snow you and customers trust you
- Straight communication. We'd rather hear "I don't know, I'll find out" than a polished non-answer
