Waste Water Treatment Plant Operator

The Wastewater Treatment Operator Day-shift position is located at an Indiana manufacturing facility. The role is responsible for managing, operating, monitoring, maintaining, and troubleshooting the water and wastewater treatment systems and associated processes.
The Wastewater Treatment Operator oversees the technical aspects of plant operations and ensures compliance with all applicable state and federal regulations, as well as sewer system requirements. Work is performed with a high level of independence under the direction of the Operator of Charge, with performance evaluated through operational results, reporting, and regulatory compliance.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Perform all aspects of sampling, monitoring, and testing required to maintain compliance with Federal, State and Local regulations governing the wastewater treatment process and storm water and sludge management.
- Perform all work in conformance to Occupational Safety and Health Act regulations as well as adherence to all relevant Health, Safety & Environmental policies, procedures, and legislations.
- Perform daily checks of the water and wastewater treatment process and periodic checks of transfer and chemical feed pumps.
- Maintain open communications with the Operator of Charge regarding the treatment process operation and malfunctions, as well as making recommendations for repairs and improvements to the systems.
- Check equipment prior to start-up and assess start-up performance.
- Monitor the maintenance and performance of equipment, assess mechanical problems, and take actions to resolve promptly.
- Maintains service vehicle and tools for cleanliness and proper operation, if applicable
- Respond to unplanned events and solve customer technical problems as they are identified, requested, or arise, all while maintaining positive customer relations.
- Engage with customers in a courteous and professional manner. Ensures prompt and efficient attention to customer needs.
- Write clear, concise daily reports to keep management appraised of job progress. Maintain accurate records utilizing Microsoft Office programs including Excel and PowerPoint.
KNOWLEDGE and/or Experience
- Indiana Wastewater Treatment Plant Operators License – Industrial Class A or the ability to obtain within first year of service.
- Two years’ experience in a Wastewater Treatment Industry or any combination of experience and education.
- High school diploma or GED
JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES
- Able to perform and document various tests required by State and Federal agencies for the operation of a wastewater treatment plant.
- Working knowledge of the operation, methods, and procedures of a wastewater treatment plant. Experience in treating metals and plating processes a plus.
- Basic knowledge of State and Federal rules governing wastewater discharges and workers’ safety.
- Have the ability to work with independence and to make routine decisions on the operation of the plant processes and equipment during the Operator of Charge’s absence.
- Able to clearly communicate both orally and in writing.
- Must be an initiative-taker with good follow-through, capable of working independently with little supervision
Computer Skills
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or related software to maintain records, input data, and generate reports, with the ability to quickly learn new or updated systems.
education/Certifications/Licenses
- Wastewater Treatment Plant Operators License (Industrial class “A”) or have the ability to obtain within 1st year of service with company. (company will cover costs of obtaining and maintaining licenses)
- Maintain a valid driver’s license
Physical Requirements
- Work is typically performed in an indoor manufacturing environment.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit or stand, walk, talk, and listen; occasionally, the employee may occasionally have to stoop, bend, reach, ascend and decent stairs, and lift up to 50 pounds.
- Employees need manual dexterity to operate standard office equipment and a personal computer, clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities to discern verbal instructions and to communicate effectively with others and visual acuity to comprehend written work instructions and review, evaluate, and prepare a variety of written materials and documents.
