Des Moines Asphalt and Paving, a CRH company, has been leading the asphalt industry in Central Iowa for over forty-five years. We have completed a wide variety of projects including highway and street paving, commercial paving projects, parking lot construction, custom asphalt milling, and chip sealing.


Position Overview

The Superintendent will be responsible for the overall direction, coordination, implementation, execution, control and completion of projects.


Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)

  • Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Environmental, Health & Safety Manual
  • Ensure all operations are in full compliance with Federal/State/Local Regulations.
  • Lead employee meetings, including daily T-5 meetings, address employees’ safety concerns and conduct HR and safety training as needed.
  • Maintain daily control of project(s): management and coordination of onsite personnel, equipment operations and subcontractor activities.
  • Establish, monitor and adjust construction schedules to ensure timely project delivery.
  • Read and comprehend project specifications.
  • Accurate and timely preparation of project schedules, timecards, equipment hours, production reports and purchase orders.
  • Provide management updates and alert them to urgent issues.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with vendors, subcontractors, general contractors, as well as customers/owners’ representatives.
  • Fill in for crew when needed and where required, efficiently operate equipment to maximize production.
  • Support hiring, training, coaching and development of team members to build a high-performance culture.
  • Identify hazards, follow instructions, and accurately complete paperwork.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education/Experience

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required; and three to five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of MSHA/OSHA rules and regulations required.
  • Previous industry experience in building materials and/or heavy highway paving preferred.


Work Requirements

  • Must be 18 years in age or older.
  • Must pass pre-employment drug screen and criminal/motor vehicle background check.
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license and maintain a driving record that meets company requirements.
  • Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook.
  • Regular and consistent attendance is required and must be willing to work nights, weekends and holidays when necessary.
  • Must be willing to travel to other locations frequently within the workday.
  • Individuals are required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) in designated operations and production areas as stated by OSHA and/or MSHA, Company Policy and specific Job Site Requirements


Knowledge/Skill Requirements

  • Must be proficient in Microsoft suite of tools including Excel, Word, Outlook, database software, able to utilize internet and communicate effectively.
  • Demonstrated ability to train, motive and lead employees.
  • Basic knowledge of labor and employment laws.
  • Demonstrate basic mathematical skills as well as the ability to interpret financial data and information.
  • Willingness and ability to work in and adapt to changes in circumstances, tasks, customer needs and other conditions that may affect their daily responsibilities.
  • Ability to cope well in stressful environments and communicate professionally.
  • Demonstrate a strong dedication to meeting the needs and expectations of our internal and external customers.
  • Willingness to work independently within a team environment and assist the team with other duties as required.
  • Ability to facilitate change management and influence positive responses.
  • Effective interpersonal skills; building rapport, listening, presenting, giving, and receiving feedback.
  • Experience in strategic planning and execution.
  • High degree of drive, initiative, and motivation. Action-oriented and results-oriented.


Physical Requirements

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Able to utilize a computer for word processing, email communication, and preparation of documents and presentations.
  • Able to regularly lift and/or move up to 20 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to frequently talk, hear, walk, and sit as well as occasionally required to stand, reach use hands and fingers to manipulate objects or controls, climb or balance, stoop, kneel and crouch.
  • Vision abilities (with correction) include close, distance, peripheral, depth, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Able to climb ladders and to work at heights as well as work in tight quarters.


Work Environment

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles and outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. A variety of noise levels, adverse weather conditions, and complex job sites are to be expected daily. Proper clothing, PPE (personal protective equipment) is required, and safety precautions should be taken to ensure your safety, and the safety of others in all conditions. While performing non-field duties in this position, the environment is typical of an office setting, and the noise level is usually quiet to moderate.
