Applications Engineer

Midwest Air Products Co., Inc. (Mapco) · Traverse City, MI · Full-time · In person

Engineering role on the front end of every job. Recent graduates welcome. Fully paid health insurance.

Schedule: Monday through Friday, in person at our Traverse City office.

About Us

Since 1979, Mapco has designed, built, and installed corrosion-resistant PVC pollution control systems for industrial customers, including scrubbers, mist eliminators, and fans. Our work keeps harmful emissions out of the air, and we're growing our team.

About the Role

You will work alongside our Sales Manager on every job, from the first customer inquiry through equipment design, estimating, and a clean handoff to the shop. You will help engineer the systems we build, covering both the technical and customer side of each project. Along the way, you will learn how we design, estimate, and quote today, and look for ways to improve it as we grow.

What You'll Do

  • Review customer inquiries, specs, and RFQs, and gather the technical details needed to design and quote (airflow, chemicals, site conditions)
  • Help size and select scrubbers, mist eliminators, fans, ductwork, and other equipment
  • Take part in the design of each system alongside our Sales Manager and drafter
  • Review job drawings for accuracy before they go to the customer or the shop
  • Build cost estimates for materials, fabrication labor, and installation
  • Prepare quotes and proposals with the Sales Manager
  • Answer technical questions from customers by phone and email
  • Visit customer sites occasionally to take measurements and understand the application
  • Hand off won jobs to the shop with complete, accurate specs
  • Help document and standardize our design, estimating, and quoting process

What We're Looking For

  • Degree in mechanical, chemical, or environmental engineering, or equivalent technical experience
  • Recent graduates welcome. We'll train you on our equipment and process.
  • Strong blueprint and technical drawing reading skills
  • Solid grasp of engineering fundamentals such as fluid flow and basic chemistry
  • Strong with numbers and Excel
  • Detail oriented. Small errors in a design or estimate turn into big problems on a job.
  • Organized, able to juggle multiple jobs and shifting priorities
  • Clear communicator, comfortable with regular customer contact by phone and email
  • Willing to travel occasionally to customer sites
  • Valid driver's license

Nice to have:

  • Estimating or quoting experience in a fabrication or engineered-to-order environment
  • Air pollution control, industrial ventilation, or HVAC experience
  • Plastics, PVC, or FRP knowledge, including chemical resistance
  • CAD experience (viewing, measuring, or making minor edits to drawings)
  • Experience building templates, checklists, or process documentation

We're a small company with many different roles in the shop, engineering, installation, and beyond. People who show strong skills and initiative have opportunities to take on more responsibility as they grow with us.
