Job Title: District Subject Area Coordinator

Primary Purpose:
Evaluate and provide leadership for the overall instructional program of the district in the subject assigned. Responsible for the effective and efficient operation of curriculum and instruction, staff development, school improvement, and in-district assessment for assigned subject area in grades K - 12.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
Master’s degree
Valid Texas Certification in specified subject area
Special Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Knowledge of curriculum and special student programs
Ability to evaluate instructional programs and teaching effectiveness
Ability to manage budget
Ability to coordinate district functions
Ability to implement policy and procedures
Ability to interpret data
Ability to work effectively and in close contact with a team of adults
Strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills
Knowledge of strategies and materials for subject area assigned
Knowledge of instructional technology
Experience:
Three years experience as a classroom teacher in the subject area assigned with established reputation as an educational leader
Three years experience in instructional leadership roles
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Instructional and Program Management
1. Coordinates, directs, evaluates, and works to improve district curriculum, programs and activities, provides recommendations designed for continuous curriculum and improvements and development for grades K – 12.
2. Plan, implement, and evaluate instructional programs with teachers and principals, including learning objectives, instructional strategies, and assessment techniques.
3. Apply research and data to improve the content, sequence, and outcomes of the teaching-learning process.
4. Work with appropriate staff to develop, maintain, and revise curriculum documents based on systematic review and analysis.
5. Involve instructional staff in evaluating and selecting instructional materials to meet student learning needs.
6. Ensure that the district goals and objectives are developed using collaborative processes and problem-solving techniques when appropriate.
7. Participate in the campus-level decision making process to establish and review the district’s goals and objectives and major classroom instructional programs of the district.
8. Actively support the efforts of others to achieve district goals and objectives and campus performance objectives (academic excellence indicators).
9. Obtain and use evaluative findings (including student achievement data) to examine curriculum and instruction program effectiveness
10. Develop and revise curriculum in assigned area.
11. Develop and coordinate a continuing evaluation of the instructional program and implement changes based on the findings.
12. Consult with parents, administrators, counselors, teachers and community agencies, and other relevant individuals in developing the mission and articulating a vision for the district instructional program.
13. Plan and conduct parent meetings, including parent advisory committee meetings.
14. Secure consultants, specialists, and other community resources to assist principals and instructional staff in attaining objectives.
15. Provide effective staff development activities that incorporate the mission of the district, program evaluation outcomes, and input from teachers and others.
16. Facilitate the evaluation, selection, and adoption of textbooks.
17. Coordinates programs between all campuses; works with members of the curriculum staff to ensure a coordinated and consistent K-12 continuum across all content areas.
18. Ensures current trends in district technology are integrated into the curriculum.
19. May conduct observations for classroom teachers if requested; visits classrooms and conferences with teachers as necessary to diagnose areas of concern and plan for improvement of instruction.
Policy, Reports, and Law
20. Implement the policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and local board policy in curriculum and instruction area.
21. Compile, maintain, and present all reports, records and other documents required.
22. Prepares reports, materials, and data to provide the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction with information relative to instructional programs.
Budget
23. Facilitate the curriculum and instruction budget and ensure that programs are cost-effective and funds are managed prudently.
24. Compile budgets and cost estimates based on documented program needs.
Communication
25. Provide for two-way communication with principals, teachers, staff, parents, and community.
26. Demonstrate skill in conflict resolution with administrators, parents, teachers, staff and community.
27. Monitor professional research and disseminate ideas and information to other professionals.
Community Relations
28. Articulate the district’s mission, instructional philosophy, and curriculum implementation strategies to the community and solicit its support in realizing district’s mission.
29. Demonstrate the awareness of district-community need and initiate activities to meet those needs.
30. Demonstrate use of appropriate and effective techniques to encourage community and parent involvement.
31. Complete other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Directs and supervises the work of assigned clerical assistants.
