Summary

The Post-Graduate Year 1 (PGY1) Pharmacy Residency program prepares pharmacists to practice as highly qualified independent practitioners able to provide patient care in a variety of environments, apply skill in medication related education, serve as leaders within the profession of pharmacy, and excel during further post-graduate training. This position screens physician orders to ensure the correct medications are given to individual patients that range in age from birth to 100 years assuring that the most correct drug and dose is prescribed, dispensed, administered and properly monitored. Incumbents screen orders for proper drug/dosage, drug interaction, adverse reactions, allergies, and contraindications. Research and answer drug information questions and provide various clinical pharmacy services.

Responsibilities

The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency is a 12-month postgraduate curriculum that offers training opportunities in acute care, ambulatory care, drug information and drug use policy development, clinical services and practice leadership. Our residents will have the opportunity to provide pharmaceutical care to patients in multiple settings, develop independent learning skills, maintain a professional ethic, provide effective drug education to others, understand research methods and opportunities, recognize the principles and application of drug use control, and assume personal responsibility for effecting change. A range of elective rotations are available, allowing residents to pursue individual goals as well as complete core rotations. In addition, pharmacy residents are required to work on a longitudinal research project which will be presented at a regional showcase. Upon completion of the ASHP accredited program, individuals are awarded a residency certificate.

The Pharmacy Residency Program will follow the accreditation standards set forth by ASHP below:

  • PGY1 Residency Accreditation Standard with Guidance
  • Required PGY1 CAGO
  • Elective PGY1 CAGO

Resident job duties

(75%)* Requirements: · Objective Achievement: Minimum 31 of 33 program required objectives rated as Achieved for the Residency (ACHR).

  • No objectives rated as "needs improvement" on final rating.
  • Complete all required learning experiences
  • Complete all assigned evaluations in PharmAcademicTM
  • Complete MUE and present at appropriate meeting
  • Complete drug monograph or treatment protocol revision and present at appropriate committee meeting
  • Present major project at residency conference or other professional meeting
  • Manuscript of major project in publishable form and approved by primary project preceptor
  • Prepare and present monthly medication error analysis at one medication safety meeting
  • Complete 4 journal club presentations
  • Projects, presentations, work products uploaded to PharmAcademicTM

Regarding the service component of the residency program, the resident will be required to exercise their professional license and independently function as a pharmacist working in specified areas:

  • (10%)* Receives and reviews all prescriptions for correctness and appropriateness and dispenses the most appropriate medications for individual patients.
  • (5%)* Supervises the preparation of intravenous admixtures and parenteral products.
  • (5%)* Responsible for the pharmacy workflow and leadership on their shift and communication between shifts. Follows up on problems during the course of the daily shift.
  • (5%)* Participates in patient care rounds with nursing, physicians, dietitians, social workers and other health professionals to provide multidisciplinary approach to the care of each patient, as applies to the specific affiliate where pharmacist works.

Certifications and Licensures

CSL PHARM - Controlled Substance

Required Equivalent Experience - Controlled substance license in the State of Michigan after 2 months of employment or 3 months if a 1 months extension is granted.

PHARM - Pharmacist

Required Equivalent Experience - License in the State of Michigan after 2months of employment or 3 months if a 1 month extension is granted.

Required Education

Education: Doctorate Comments: PharmD

Other Information

Resident Licensure and Dismissal procedure (when applicable):

  • The pharmacy resident should submit appropriate documentation to the State Board of Pharmacy where they will pursue pharmacist licensure as soon as possible after learning where they have matched for their residency program.
  • The resident must be fully licensed as a pharmacist (successfully passing the North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination NAPLEX and Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudent Examination MPJE and having an active pharmacist license in the state of Michigan) within 60 days of the beginning of the residency.
  • If the resident is not licensed within 60 days of the beginning of the residency program, the following applies:
  • If the resident has taken, but not successfully passed either the NAPLEX or MPJE exam, or both, the Residency Advisory Committee (RAC) may consider allowing a 30 day extension, which will allow the resident to complete two-thirds of the residency as a licensed pharmacist.
  • If approved, this extension will be noted in the RAC minutes.
  • If this extension is not approved, the resident will be dismissed. o If the resident has not taken both the NAPLEX and MPJE exams within 90 days of the beginning of the program, the resident will be dismissed from the program.
  • If a 30 day extension has been provided and the resident is still not licensed as a pharmacist at the end of the 30 day extension, the resident will be dismissed.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING AND SKILLS:

  • Basic knowledge of personal computer needed to enter prescription information. Organizational skills needed to prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups and interact with people at all levels to communicate ideas and concepts in a clear and understanding manner.
