Job Title: Varsity Boys Assistant Basketball Coach

Reports To: Head Varsity Boys Basketball Coach & Athletic Director

FLSA Status: Stipend/Seasonal

Position Summary:
The Varsity Boys Assistant Basketball Coach supports the Head Coach in developing, organizing, and leading the high school boys’ basketball program in accordance with VHSL rules, school district policies, and athletic department guidelines. The assistant coach plays a vital role in fostering student-athletes’ athletic skills, academic success, sportsmanship, and personal growth.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Assist the Head Coach in planning, conducting, and supervising all practices and games.

• Instruct student-athletes in fundamental and advanced basketball skills, strategy, and teamwork.

• Support the Head Coach in developing game plans, scouting opponents, and making in-game adjustments.

• Promote safety, proper conditioning, and injury prevention in accordance with VHSL regulations and school protocols.

• Supervise athletes before, during, and after practices, games, and team travel to ensure safety and appropriate conduct.

• Uphold and enforce VHSL rules, eligibility standards, and sportsmanship expectations.

• Serve as a positive role model by demonstrating respect, integrity, and leadership.

• Assist with equipment management, game-day operations, and record-keeping as directed by the Head Coach.

• Communicate effectively with student-athletes, parents, faculty, and athletic staff.

• Encourage academic achievement and monitor athletes’ eligibility in collaboration with the Head Coach and school staff.

• Participate in required VHSL clinics, meetings, and professional development as assigned.

Qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent required; college degree preferred.

• Previous basketball coaching or playing experience at the high school, collegiate, or club level preferred.

• Knowledge of basketball rules, fundamentals, and VHSL regulations.

• Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, and staff.

• Demonstrated ability to serve as a positive role model and mentor for student-athletes.

Work Conditions:

• Seasonal, part-time position aligned with the VHSL basketball season schedule.

• Requires evenings, weekends, and travel for practices and competitions.

• Must be able to meet the physical demands of demonstrating basketball techniques and supervising student-athletes.
