What are the responsibilities and job description for the Anticipated Custodian position at Middlesex County Magnet Schools?
- To provide a safe, clean, and comfortable school/office environment for all students and staff.
- Opens and closes the building each day. Determines, before leaving, that all doors and windows are secured and all lights, except those left on for safety reasons, are turned off. Secures the building when facilities are not in use, checking for unlocked doors and windows, and reporting any unauthorized occupants.
- Checks daily to ensure that all exit doors are accessible and that all panic bolts are working properly during building occupancy hours.
- Keeps building and school entrance sidewalks neat and clean at all times.
- Operates heat, ventilation, and air conditioning systems to provide temperature appropriate to the season and to ensure economical use of fuel, water, and electricity.
- Cleans and dusts areas such as classrooms, administrative spaces, media center, shop locker area, gymnasium, teams and locker rooms, and faculty room daily; empties/cleans waste baskets in these areas.
- Clean, sweep, vacuum, and mop common areas such as corridors, vestibules, and staircases each school day and during the day when necessary.
- Thoroughly clean and sanitize bathrooms and replenish paper and soap supplies as needed.
- Cleans and sanitizes all drinking fountains daily.
- Cleans cafeteria dining areas and food preparation service shops daily as required.
- Supports and enforces all district health and safety regulations, guidelines, and policies as established by the Board of Education of the Magnet Schools in the County of Middlesex, NJ.
- Moves furniture and equipment within the building as required for various activities and as directed by the Head Custodian and/or Night Operations Coordinator, Building Administrator, and/or Director of Facilities. Assists with the setup of facilities for meetings, conferences, events, etc.
- Complies with all laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of recyclables, trash, waste, and debris.
- Clean all whiteboards, as required by the Building Administrator.
- Conducts an ongoing program of general maintenance, upkeep, and reporting, promptly making minor repairs and reporting major needs to the Head Custodian and/or Night Operations Coordinator and, ultimately, the Director of Facilities.
- Uses and maintains assigned power equipment and hand tools (i.e., auto-scrubbers, extractors, high-pressure washers, buffers, high-speed buffers, vacuums, brooms, mops, squeegees) for the cleaning and general maintenance of floors, walls, carpets, furniture, etc. Reports ineffective equipment to the Head Custodian/Night Operations Coordinator/ Director of Facilities.
- Clean all interior and exterior glass windows and doors, and shades/blinds as needed or scheduled.
- Cleans/washes walls as needed or scheduled.
- Launder dust mops and cleaning rags weekly.
- Perform an ongoing floor care program for our carpeted and hard-surface areas to ensure they are clean, attractive, and in good condition.
- Shovel, plow, salt, and/or sweep sidewalks, steps, and parking areas as necessary.
- Displays the US flag during school hours when school is in session, or when the flag must be lowered to half-staff.
- Attends to building emergencies whenever necessary.
- Attends professional development events as required by the district administration and employment contract.
- Keeps custodial closets, carts, and shelves stocked with supplies in a neat, orderly manner.
- Uploads work orders in the designated computer system.
- Check the area for vandalism and report it to the Head Custodian/Night Operations Coordinator and/or Director of Facilities.
- Frequently be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, including but not limited to cleaning supplies, pails, and big boxes. Occasionally lift or move up to 80 pounds.
- Performs any duties and responsibilities within the scope of employment as assigned by the Head Custodian/Building Administrator/Director of Facilities.

Brief Description:
The Board of Education of Middlesex County Magnet Schools is currently accepting applications for the Custodian position for the 2025-2026 school year.
The successful candidate will be expected to obtain a Boiler-Fireman Low-Pressure (Black Seal) License within one year of employment.
The hours for this position are 3:00 pm to 11:00 pm.
Responsibilities:
$43,898 – $66,098 annually, commensurate with experience, education, and professional credentials.
