Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA/COTA)

Job Summary

The Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA), under the supervision of a licensed Occupational Therapist (OT), provides rehabilitative services to residents in a skilled nursing setting. The OTA assists patients in improving functional independence, safety, and quality of life through therapeutic interventions focused on activities of daily living (ADLs), mobility, cognition, and adaptive techniques.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

• Implement individualized treatment plans developed by the Occupational Therapist

• Provide therapeutic interventions to improve residents’ ability to perform ADLs (e.g., dressing, bathing, toileting, grooming, feeding)

• Assist with therapeutic exercises, functional mobility, balance, coordination, and strength training

• Instruct residents in the use of adaptive equipment and compensatory techniques

• Monitor and document resident progress, responses to treatment, and functional outcomes

• Communicate effectively with the supervising OT regarding patient status and treatment modifications

• Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members (PT, SLP, nursing, social services, etc.)

• Maintain accurate, timely documentation in accordance with facility policies and regulatory standards (Medicare, insurance, state/federal guidelines)

• Ensure treatment areas and equipment are safe, clean, and properly maintained

• Educate residents and families on home exercise programs, safety strategies, and discharge recommendations

• Adhere to ethical standards, infection control policies, and resident rights at all times

Qualifications

• Associate degree from an accredited Occupational Therapy Assistant program

• Current state licensure or certification as an Occupational Therapy Assistant

• NBCOT certification (if required by state)

• CPR certification (or willingness to obtain)

• Experience in a skilled nursing or geriatric setting preferred

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Strong understanding of geriatric and post-acute rehabilitation

• Ability to work with residents with orthopedic, neurological, cognitive, and chronic conditions

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

• Ability to manage a productive caseload in a fast-paced environment

• Proficiency with electronic medical records (EMR) system, NetHealth

• Compassionate, patient-centered approach to care

Physical Requirements

• Ability to lift, transfer, and assist residents as required

• Ability to stand, walk, bend, and perform repetitive movements throughout the workday

• Visual and auditory ability sufficient to assess and treat residents safely
