About Middle River Power

Middle River Power is a private equity-backed independent power producer with over 8GW of natural gas, coal, battery storage, and solar assets across the U.S. We're a lean team of ~100 people building the infrastructure of the energy transition and we operate like a growth company, not a utility. Our development team is actively advancing a pipeline of utility-scale projects, and this summer we're bringing in one engineering intern to work alongside them.

What development does

At Middle River Power we develop, construct, own, and operate power generating assets. We build projects that respond to customers’ needs. We take tangible steps in the energy transition from traditional carbon emitting generators (boilers and turbines) to optimized facilities built around renewable generating technologies.

What This Internship Actually Is

This is not a shadow program. You will be assigned to real, active development projects, helping the team move work forward on engineering coordination, permitting research, interconnection tracking, procurement support, or project scheduling. We build projects that respond to customers’ needs. We take tangible steps in the energy transition from traditional carbon emitting generators (boilers and turbines) to optimized facilities built around renewable generating technologies. Your specific assignment will depend on where the pipeline is when you start, but the expectation is the same: contribute something that matters.

What You Might Work On

  • Utility scale power generation sites
  • Site layout and engineering document review for an active generation or storage project
  • Interconnection queue research — understanding where a project stands and what's required to advance
  • Permitting milestone tracker — mapping federal, state, and local approval requirements
  • Procurement support — RFPs, vendor evaluations, or technical submittal review
  • Policy and incentive research — ITC/PTC, FERC orders, state-level programs relevant to MRP's strategy
  • O&M planning documentation for a BESS or hybrid project in development

Who We're Looking For

  • Rising junior or senior (or recent grad) in Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, or Industrial Engineering, or Construction Management
  • Genuinely interested in energy, power markets, generation technology, project development, or infrastructure
  • Strong with MS Office; any exposure to project scheduling tools (MS Project, P6) is a bonus
  • Able to read (or learn to read) technical drawings, specs, and regulatory documents
  • Comfortable in a low-structure, high-accountability environment
  • Clear communicator in writing and in person; your work will be seen by senior stakeholders

Ideal Candidate Profile

  • Rising junior or senior pursuing a BS in Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, or Industrial Engineering, or Construction Management — OR a recent graduate in a related field
  • Genuine interest in energy, power generation, or infrastructure — energy coursework, student energy clubs, or prior internship experience a strong plus
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint); MS Project or similar scheduling software exposure is a bonus
  • Ability to read technical documents and drawings at a foundational level — or a strong desire to learn
  • Self-directed and comfortable asking questions in an environment where not everything is defined
  • Strong written communication — this role produces memos, trackers, and summaries that reach senior stakeholders

Program Elements

  • Week 1 company orientation with introduction to MRP leadership, culture, and business strategy
  • Weekly 30-minute check-in with direct supervisor (Project Developer)
  • Midpoint structured feedback session (Week 5–6) — written input from supervisor
  • Final presentation or technical memo delivered to VP of Development and development team
  • Cross-functional exposure: intern will interact with Asset Management, O&M, and potentially Commercial teams as project work dictates
  • Return offer consideration extended within 2 weeks of program completion for top performers

Why MRP

You'll work on real projects with real timelines with direct mentorship from an experienced Project Developer. Exposure across the full development lifecycle: engineering, permitting, procurement, interconnection, and market dynamics.

Top performers are considered for return offers (Associate Developer path) following graduation
