Position Summary
Responsible for leading, developing, and mentoring student-athletes in the JV basketball program. This position focuses on building fundamental skills, promoting teamwork, and preparing athletes for potential participation at the varsity level while supporting the overall goals of the athletic department and school district.
The coach will plan and conduct effective practices, develop game strategies, and provide instruction that emphasizes skill development, sportsmanship, discipline, and academic achievement. The JV coach works in coordination with the varsity head coach to ensure program consistency and alignment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Plan, organize, and conduct effective practices focused on skill development, team concepts, conditioning, and game preparation.
- Teach fundamental basketball skills, strategies, and techniques appropriate for the JV level.
- Develop and implement game plans in coordination with the varsity head coach to ensure program consistency.
- Instruct student-athletes on teamwork, sportsmanship, discipline, and positive character development.
- Evaluate player performance and provide constructive feedback to support individual and team growth.
- Supervise student-athletes during all practices, games, travel, and team-related activities to ensure safety and appropriate behavior.
- Promote academic success by encouraging student-athletes to maintain eligibility and communicate academic concerns when needed.
- Assist in the development of the overall basketball program philosophy and long-term athlete development pipeline.
- Maintain equipment and ensure proper care of facilities used by the team.
- Follow all school district, league, and state athletic association rules, policies, and procedures.
- Communicate effectively with players, parents, and coaching staff regarding expectations, schedules, and team matters.
- Support varsity program needs when appropriate, including scouting, player development, and practice collaboration.
- Always represent the school district in a professional manner, including conduct, appearance, and communication.
Qualifications
- Prior coaching experience in basketball (middle school, JV, varsity, or club level) strongly preferred.
- Strong knowledge of basketball fundamentals, rules, strategies, and skill development techniques.
- Ability to effectively teach, motivate, and mentor student-athletes in a positive and structured environment.
