Performs jobsite observations, leads local safety meetings, engages with local workgroups to identify, mitigate and share safety hazards in the office and field, develops and delivers local safety improvement plan initiatives, and provides non-centralized safety training to the local workgroups. Makes recommendations to correct deficiencies, eliminate hazards and improve overall programs, including hazard risk assessments. Reviews safety training programs developed by the Program Manager, Safety Training to ensure compliance with federal, state and department of transportation regulations and recommends modifications based upon adult learning styles. Develops, implements and monitors the quality of safety programs defined by senior management. Evaluates incident trends, regulatory changes, industry standards, and provides improvement recommendations to local operations managers, including the development and implementation of improvement strategies. Provides full support of severe storm and plant outages when required. Coordinates regulatory safety training.


Maintains knowledge of company and government safety requirements and regulations and equipment specifications by attending operations and safety committee meetings, studying procedural and equipment materials, and attending internal and external training programs.

Lead monthly safety meetings covering compliances topic, HPI, occupational safety topics, recent events, provide safety awards, assist local management with other meeting items depending on location. Verify meeting minutes and submit rosters.

Complete weekly job site observations with all crew in all type of areas and job tasks.

Job site observations include a combination of these activities; stop any hazardous work or condition that they witness, review and sign tailboard, watch the crew work for a period of time, complete an inspection of vehicles to look for obvious issues, review set up, PPE, traffic control and safety procedures including MAD and other potential hazards. Even if not a SME in electrical hazards, complete these with all crafts.

Offer safety advice, policy guidance. Evaluates incident trends and makes recommendations for safety improvement tasks in the local safety improvement plan (SIP).

Leads teams assigned specific prevention tasks in the local SIP and develops specific action plans to ensure assignments are planned and executed on time.

Provides full support of severe storm and plant outages when required.

Works with external safety vendors to develop and maintain operational programs related to equipment use, behavior-based safety, personal protective equipment and other safety initiatives.

Ensures changes in regulations and company policies are incorporated in training programs and procedures.

Delivers training in classroom, one-on-one setting, via internet, written or other communication methods.

Travels from location to location within MEC service territory and occasionally to other companies for storm, emergency or other as assigned to perform safety training.

Ensures administrative requirements are met for the completion of evaluation and training records and data is entered into the company data retention system or retained by file according to regulation and policy.

Demonstration of knowledge and understanding of human performance improvement techniques.


Bachelor's degree in safety, business-related studies or equivalent related work experience. (Typically, six years of related, progressive work experience would be needed for candidates applying for this position who do not possess a bachelor's degree.)

Six years work experience in electric and gas operations and/or safety compliance.

Leadership skills to provide instruction, orientation, guidance and direction.

Communication skills to transmit information accurately and understandably in written and verbal format and communicate effectively in group settings.

Short-term project management planning skills to plan workflow, coordinate projects and resolve conflicting demands.

Administrative skills to follow company standards and policies.

Effective analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills.

Interpretation skills to determine compliance with new and existing safety regulations.

Certificate in safety is desired.

Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks and projects concurrently.
