Responsibilities
- Own the Azure Power BI environment, including tenant governance, workspace strategy, deployment pipelines, and lifecycle management across development, test, and production.
- Define and enforce Power BI standards for dataset design, semantic models, report development, performance optimization, and reuse.
- Partner with Azure data platform teams to ensure BI solutions are built on scalable, governed, and well‑modeled data foundations.
- Lead the design and stewardship of enterprise semantic models (star/snowflake schemas) optimized for Power BI, enabling consistent KPIs and self‑service analytics.
- Establish modeling standards for measures (DAX), dimensions, hierarchies, calculation groups, and aggregations.
- Ensure alignment between BI models and upstream data architecture (lakehouse / warehouse patterns).
- Partner with business leaders across electric and gas operations, finance, regulatory, customer, asset management, and corporate functions to translate business needs into actionable BI solutions.
- Prioritize and deliver dashboards and reports that support operational performance, reliability, safety, regulatory reporting, and executive decision‑making.
- Ensure BI solutions support utility‑specific use cases such as load, outage, reliability, asset health, customer usage, and financial performance.
- Implement and enforce row‑level security (RLS), object‑level security, and least‑privilege access patterns across Power BI datasets and reports.
- Ensure BI solutions comply with internal governance and regulatory requirements (e.g., NERC CIP, SOX, privacy policies).
- Partner with data governance and security teams to ensure lineage, metadata, certification, and audit readiness.
- Monitor and optimize dataset refresh performance, query execution, and report responsiveness.
- Lead root‑cause analysis for BI incidents (e.g., failed refreshes, performance degradation) and drive durable fixes.
- Define SLAs, monitoring, and support models to ensure Power BI solutions are reliable and trusted by the business.
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of BI engineers and analysts, fostering a culture of quality, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Establish clear roles, expectations, and career paths for BI practitioners.
- Promote best practices through code reviews, design reviews, documentation, and knowledge sharing.
- Act as a trusted advisor to business and IT leadership on BI strategy, roadmap, and investment priorities.
- Balance short‑term delivery with long‑term platform sustainability, scalability, and cost efficiency.
- Communicate BI value, risks, and tradeoffs clearly to technical and non‑technical audiences.
- Bachelor’s degree in information systems, computer science, analytics, or a related technical field, or equivalent work experience. (Typically four years of additional related, progressive work experience would be needed for candidates applying for this position who do not possess a bachelor's degree)
- Eight or more years of experience in business intelligence, analytics, or data platforms, with at least two years in a leadership or lead role.
- Advanced expertise in Microsoft Power BI, including:
- Semantic model design and optimization
- DAX and performance tuning
- Workspace and deployment pipeline management
- Security (RLS / OLS)
- Strong experience with Azure data platforms (e.g., Azure Data Lake, Databricks) and how BI layers consume enterprise data.
- Deep understanding of BI best practices, including data modeling, visualization standards, self‑service enablement, and governance.
- Experience operating BI platforms in regulated enterprise environments, including change management, audit support, and access controls.
- Prior experience in the utility industry (electric and/or gas), with familiarity across operational, financial, and regulatory data domains, strongly preferred.
