Job Description

As a Manager of Business Intelligence, you will lead the design, delivery, and operational excellence of enterprise BI solutions that enable data driven decision making across electric and gas utility operations. You will own the analytics platform and semantic layer, partner closely with business and IT stakeholders, and manage a team of BI engineers and analysts to deliver reliable, secure, and scalable analytics aligned to regulatory, operational, and executive needs.

This role blends people leadership, platform ownership, and strategic BI architecture, ensuring trusted insights across generation, transmission, distribution, customer, finance, and regulatory domains.

Responsibilities

  • Own the Azure Power BI environment, including tenant governance, workspace strategy, deployment pipelines, and lifecycle management across development, test, and production.
  • Define and enforce Power BI standards for dataset design, semantic models, report development, performance optimization, and reuse.
  • Partner with Azure data platform teams to ensure BI solutions are built on scalable, governed, and well‑modeled data foundations.

Define BI Architecture, Semantic Models, and Reporting Standards

  • Lead the design and stewardship of enterprise semantic models (star/snowflake schemas) optimized for Power BI, enabling consistent KPIs and self‑service analytics.
  • Establish modeling standards for measures (DAX), dimensions, hierarchies, calculation groups, and aggregations.
  • Ensure alignment between BI models and upstream data architecture (lakehouse / warehouse patterns).

Deliver High‑Impact Analytics for Utility Operations

  • Partner with business leaders across electric and gas operations, finance, regulatory, customer, asset management, and corporate functions to translate business needs into actionable BI solutions.
  • Prioritize and deliver dashboards and reports that support operational performance, reliability, safety, regulatory reporting, and executive decision‑making.
  • Ensure BI solutions support utility‑specific use cases such as load, outage, reliability, asset health, customer usage, and financial performance.

Establish Governance, Security, and Compliance Controls

  • Implement and enforce row‑level security (RLS), object‑level security, and least‑privilege access patterns across Power BI datasets and reports.
  • Ensure BI solutions comply with internal governance and regulatory requirements (e.g., NERC CIP, SOX, privacy policies).
  • Partner with data governance and security teams to ensure lineage, metadata, certification, and audit readiness.

Drive Performance, Reliability, and Operational Excellence

  • Monitor and optimize dataset refresh performance, query execution, and report responsiveness.
  • Lead root‑cause analysis for BI incidents (e.g., failed refreshes, performance degradation) and drive durable fixes.
  • Define SLAs, monitoring, and support models to ensure Power BI solutions are reliable and trusted by the business.

Providing People Leadership and Team Development

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of BI engineers and analysts, fostering a culture of quality, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Establish clear roles, expectations, and career paths for BI practitioners.
  • Promote best practices through code reviews, design reviews, documentation, and knowledge sharing.

Partner with Stakeholders and Influence Strategy

  • Act as a trusted advisor to business and IT leadership on BI strategy, roadmap, and investment priorities.
  • Balance short‑term delivery with long‑term platform sustainability, scalability, and cost efficiency.
  • Communicate BI value, risks, and tradeoffs clearly to technical and non‑technical audiences.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in information systems, computer science, analytics, or a related technical field, or equivalent work experience. (Typically four years of additional related, progressive work experience would be needed for candidates applying for this position who do not possess a bachelor's degree)
  • Eight or more years of experience in business intelligence, analytics, or data platforms, with at least two years in a leadership or lead role.
  • Advanced expertise in Microsoft Power BI, including:
    • Semantic model design and optimization
    • DAX and performance tuning
    • Workspace and deployment pipeline management
    • Security (RLS / OLS)
  • Strong experience with Azure data platforms (e.g., Azure Data Lake, Databricks) and how BI layers consume enterprise data.
  • Deep understanding of BI best practices, including data modeling, visualization standards, self‑service enablement, and governance.
  • Experience operating BI platforms in regulated enterprise environments, including change management, audit support, and access controls.
  • Prior experience in the utility industry (electric and/or gas), with familiarity across operational, financial, and regulatory data domains, strongly preferred.
