Reports to: Executive Director or Assistant Directors

Contract Length & Wage Status: 10 months with an annual salary based on the MVSEA salary schedule

Primary Purpose: The Permanent Building Substitute Teacher is a full-time position dedicated to maintaining the continuity of student learning and effective classroom management in the absence of the special education teacher or paraprofessional, thereby supporting a consistent and productive learning environment. While primarily assigned to one district or region, this role may require service at other schools within the cooperative as needed.

Qualifications/Previous Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education or related field
  • Illinois Professional Educator License: LBS1 or special education endorsement
  • Experience working collaboratively with a wide variety of professionals and parents
  • Experience writing and implementing IEPs
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Maintain CPI certification
  • Flexibility and willingness to work with multiple age groups (K-21 years)

Key Responsibilities:

  • Take on complete case management, planning, and teaching responsibilities of a teacher on a leave of absence
  • Deliver lesson plans provided by the absent teacher or paraprofessional and modify teaching methods as needed to suit class dynamics
  • Review and implement each student's Individualized Education Program (IEP) and Behavioral Intervention Plan (BIP)
  • Oversee student behavior in the classroom and other school areas, maintaining discipline and ensuring a safe environment
  • Instruct and assist students in daily living and personal skills, such as hygiene, safety, and recreation/leisure, and foster independent skills across various environments
  • Provide feedback on student progress and classroom activities to the regular teaching staff
  • Handle attendance records and grade assignments as required by the absent teacher
  • Facilitate effective communication between students, staff, and parents and perform record-keeping tasks as needed
  • Engage in ongoing educational training and stay updated with teaching strategies
  • Inclusive of all responsibilities under the Special Education Teacher job description or Teaching Assistant Job Description as appropriate
  • Other duties as assigned by administrators
    • Assist the leadership team with planning and clerical tasks, including scheduling and transportation
    • Support teachers with curriculum planning and provide resources for students, including visual schedules and copies

  • Provides feedback and effectively communicates with students and parents
  • Follows the Board of Education, district, and building guidelines and procedures
  • Maintains a high level of integrity, fairness, ethical behavior, and confidentiality of information regarding students, personnel, and all job-related matters
  • Punctual, dependable & dedicated to providing a high-quality Special Education Program
  • Demonstrates flexibility and teamwork by completing other tasks as assigned

Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment, including personal computers and peripherals

Posture: Frequent sitting and standing, bending/stooping, transitioning from floor to standing, pushing, pulling, and twisting

Vision: The abilities required for this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus

Motion: Frequent movement throughout the work environment, repetitive hand motions, frequent keyboarding, use of a mouse, and occasional reaching

Lifting: Ability to lift up to 35 pounds

Environment: May work prolonged or irregular hours

Mental Demands: Ability to solve complex problems in situations where only limited standardization exists; ability to interpret instructions provided in written and oral form; ability to work with frequent interruptions and maintain emotional control under stress.
