Position Summary

The Sheet Sign Maker is responsible for producing high-quality highway and traffic signs in accordance with state DOT and company specifications. This position involves reading and interpreting work orders and drawings, preparing sign substrates, applying reflective sheeting and vinyl legends, and ensuring all finished products meet dimensional, material, and quality standards before shipment.

Key Responsibilities

• Review work orders, drawings, and state DOT specifications to determine sign layout, dimensions, materials, and color requirements.
• Cut, trim, and prepare aluminum or composite sign blanks for sheeting application.
• Apply reflective sheeting and vinyl legend overlays using rollers, laminators, and other hand tools.
• Operate sign shop equipment including shears, rollers, routers, and vinyl plotters.
• Weed, mask, and apply computer-cut vinyl legends and graphics to sign faces.
• Ensure proper curing, adhesion, and cleanliness of all sign surfaces.
• Perform quality inspections on all signs prior to shipment to verify accuracy of design, color, and dimensions.
• Maintain an organized, clean, and safe work area following all safety and PPE requirements.
• Record job data such as material usage, lot numbers, and production times for quality traceability.
• Assist with packaging and labeling of completed signs for shipping.
• Support inventory control by notifying supervisors of material shortages or defects.
• Collaborate with team members and supervisors to improve workflow and efficiency.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

• High school diploma or GED required.
• 1–3 years of experience in sign manufacturing, graphics application, or related production environment preferred.
• Familiarity with state DOT or MUTCD sign standards a plus.

Skills and Competencies:

• Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications.
• Strong attention to detail and quality.
• Skilled in measuring, cutting, and material handling.
• Proficient with vinyl application and basic shop tools.
• Basic computer knowledge for operating vinyl plotters or printers.
• Strong teamwork and communication skills.

Physical Requirements

Ability to stand, bend, and lift up to 50 lbs throughout the workday.

Manual dexterity for precise application of vinyl and reflective sheeting.

Comfortable working around adhesives, solvents, and shop equipment.

Work Environment

This position operates primarily in a fabrication or production shop setting. It may involve moderate noise, exposure to adhesives, and occasional lifting of large sign panels or rolls of material. Standard PPE and safety procedures are required at all times.
