Summary Of Job Description

Provides appropriate first aid and quality ancillary health care to students and employees in the Elementary/Preschool Health Center setting. Performs initial assessment and treatment within the nursing scope of practice and provides for the care and comfort of patients. Maintains infection control and safety standards, keeps accurate records of all treatment and services provided, and maintains strict confidentiality of medical records. Provides health education to promote wellness and preventive health care. Serves as a consultant to the Lead Nurse and administration regarding school community health, safety, and well-being.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Performs nursing assessments and interventions within the scope of practice of a Hawaii Registered Nurse.
  • Provides direct in-person care for students according to established protocols.
  • Monitors preschool and elementary health and safety practices in alignment with applicable licensing, Department of Human Services, and school requirements.
  • Screens students for readmission to school following illness or injury and issues appropriate medical clearance documentation.
  • Refers students to appropriate outside medical facilities as needed.
  • Implements physician treatment plans, including medication administration and ongoing treatment. Utilizes nursing judgement to determine appropriate student disposition, including return to class, rest, parent/guardian notification, or recommendation to seek outside medical care.
  • Provides health education to promote wellness and preventive health care.
  • Contacts parents/guardians after assessing a child's injury or symptoms of illness.
  • Communicates with medical facilities, parents/guardians, faculty, and staff regarding a student's health status and disposition.
  • Documents all treatment and services accurately and maintains strict confidentiality of medical issues and records.
  • Assists with health-related documentation required for preschool attendance and licensing compliance.
  • Assists in regularly reviewing student health records for abnormalities and other unusual conditions, and reviews immunization records for completeness to meet Department of Human Services and State of Hawaii requirements.
  • Reviews student medical needs prior to field trips and off-campus activities and coordinates medication, emergency action plans, first aid supplies, and staff training as needed.
  • Develops, maintains, and communicates individualized health plans and emergency action plans for students with allergies, asthma, diabetes, seizures, cardiac conditions, or other significant medical needs.
  • Ensures appropriate staff are trained on emergency medications and response procedures, including epinephrine, inhalers, glucagon, and seizure rescue medication, when applicable.
  • Provides guidance, training, and clinical oversight to health aides and other unlicensed personnel involved in student health services, in accordance with school policies, physician orders, and applicable nursing standards.
  • Maintains secure storage, administration, documentation, and disposal of student medications in accordance with school policy, physician orders, parent/guardian authorization, and applicable law.
  • Monitors expiration dates of medications and emergency supplies.
  • Monitors, documents, and communicates communicable illness trends and supports appropriate response protocols for contagious conditions, including influenza-like illness, COVID-19, conjunctivitis, gastrointestinal illness, lice, hand-foot-and-mouth disease, and other reportable or school-impacting conditions.
  • Consults with the Lead Nurse, administration, and public health agencies as appropriate regarding exclusion, return-to-school, and notification procedures.
  • Communicates with the Lead Nurse, Principal, preschool/elementary faculty, and staff regarding students' physical and/or emotional conditions that may affect the individual student's and/or other students' health, safety, and/or academic well-being.
  • Identifies patterns in injuries or health room visits and communicates concerns to the Lead Nurse and appropriate administrator.
  • Communicates with appropriate personnel regarding employee injuries or illness.
  • Works in tandem with the Lead Nurse and Middle/High School health services staff to respond to student and family inquiries regarding general health and safety.
  • Is available to perform the full scope of duties during summer school and at least one week prior to the start of the academic year.
  • Conducts health and safety training for faculty and staff, including but not limited to First Aid/CPR.
  • Regular and predictable attendance at work.

Other Position Responsibilities

  • Participates in emergency preparedness planning and drills, including lockdowns, evacuations, shelter-in-place events, natural disasters, and mass casualty response.
  • Ensures health room emergency supplies are accessible, current, and aligned with campus emergency plans.
  • Maintains health room sanitation standards, including cleaning of treatment areas, safe handling of bodily fluids, sharps disposal if applicable, and biohazard procedures.
  • Maintains all required professional licenses, certifications, and school-mandated trainings applicable to the role of a Registered Nurse, including but not limited to current Hawaii RN licensure, CPR/First Aid certification, bloodborne pathogen training, FERPA training, and other health, safety, or compliance trainings required for independent schools and the Department of Human Services.
  • Maintains infection control and safety standards in the workplace.
  • Plans and/or participates in immunization clinics.
  • Responds to campus emergencies and provides emergency care.
  • Performs other related duties as requested.
  • Participates in the development of a safe and healthy workplace.
  • Ensures compliance with safety policies and procedures.
  • Communicates safety issues with employees.
  • Ensures that employees are provided the information, instruction, training, and supervision they need to work safely.
  • Ensures that employees are aware of and abide by all relevant safety procedures.
  • Develops safe work procedures and ensures adherence to procedures.
  • Identifies, assesses as necessary, and controls hazards within the area of responsibility.
  • Encourages early reporting of incidents and informs the Lead Nurse, Principal, and Chief Operations Officer as appropriate.
  • Ensures that equipment and supplies are properly maintained.
  • Maintains relevant knowledge of safety regulations and laws.
  • Acts as a role model by demonstrating safe work behaviors.

Administrative

  • Maintains consistent standards for health recordkeeping and documentation in the Magnus software program to support standardization across Preschool, Elementary, Middle School, and High School health services.
  • Sets up and updates student files with Mid-Pacific Student Health Records, including current physical examination, TB clearance, and required immunizations.
  • Assists with the development of individual Emergency Action Plans and shares them with appropriate faculty and staff.
  • Assists with the maintenance of the AED program on campus by updating equipment and checking equipment monthly.
  • Coordinates with the Assistant to the Elementary School Principal and Lead Nurse to schedule and support bi-annual AED, CPR, and First Aid training for employees.
  • Annually assists the Lead Nurse and Chief Operating Officer with the creation of the health services budget for the following year.

  • Must be able to work well with individuals of diverse cultures and especially well with preschool and elementary-aged children.
  • Must have working knowledge of developmental stages from early childhood through elementary-aged children.
  • Must be detail oriented and communicate clearly, verbally and in writing.
  • Must be able to work with all members of the preschool and elementary faculty and staff.
  • Must have good interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with students, parents and staff.
  • Must be able to perform duties without direct supervision.
  • Must be able to identify areas of need and work collaboratively with others to develop solutions.
  • Must demonstrate effective and creative problem-solving skills.

Education And Experience

Bachelor of Science in Nursing and 2 years of experience as a licensed Registered Nurse.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • Current Hawaii R.N. license.
  • 30 CEU credits required every licensure period (every 2 years).
  • AHA Approved CPR for the Healthcare Profession Certification required.
  • Willing to be trained as a CPR/First Aid trainer
