What are the responsibilities and job description for the Supervisor/Head Lifeguard position at Mid-Island Y JCC?
General Statement of Duties
Directs and supervises subordinate lifeguards and the safeguarding of lives of patrons using aquatic facilities and performs related duties as required.
Complexity of Duties
Under general supervision, assists in training and instruction of subordinate lifeguard personnel in methods and techniques of water safety and lifesaving and in use of related equipment.
Typical Duties
1. Patrols areas and observes activities, enforces safety rules, regulations and crowd control functions to prevent accidents or injuries.
2. Supervises and evaluates the performance of subordinate lifeguards.
3. Supervises and/or carries out rescue of helpless swimmers, administers first aid and applies resuscitation measures when necessary.
4. Enforces rules and regulations pertaining to the use of the aquatic facility.
5. Keeps first aid supplies and resuscitation equipment ready for immediate use. Maintains guard station and pool area in a clean and orderly manner.
6. Participates in and supervises training and conditioning drills in swimming, lifeguarding and first aid skills.
7. Prepares and/or reviews accident reports.
8. Ensure subordinate lifeguards are maintaining minimum certifications and updating staff binder and chart.
Full Performance Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
1. Considerable knowledge of first aid, rescue, and resuscitation techniques and equipment.
2. Considerable knowledge of lifesaving methods and techniques and water safety measures.
3. Considerable knowledge of rules and regulations governing the use of water facilities.
4. Considerable swimming skill.
5. Ability to supervise and train subordinates.
6. Ability to respond effectively in emergency situations.
7. Ability to prepare accurate reports.
Minimum Qualifications
Training and Experience
American Red Cross Lifeguard Training certification
Nassau County Lifeguard Certification
CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certification
First Aid certification
Lifeguard Instructor certification (preferred)
Must be at least twenty years of age prior to employment.
More than four years of experience lifeguarding.
Ability to successfully complete a practical interview.
Ability to supervise and train subordinates
Continuing possession of all minimum required certifications
