Summary: Under the supervision of the Melt Supervisor, the Melter is responsible for producing metal for quality castings that are within customer specifications. A Melter is responsible for the metal while it is in the furnace until the time it is poured.
Education/Equivalent: Education generally equivalent to a high school diploma is preferred.
Work Experience Needed: One to three years of verifiable work history. Foundry experience is preferred.
Special Skills/Abilities Needed:
  • Ability to operate within a team atmosphere.
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one situations to other employees of the organization.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Forklift certification
Nature & Scope-Principal Areas of Responsibilities: This list of duties and responsibilities is not all inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties and responsibilities, as management may deem necessary from time to time.
  • Charges furnace with correct material for each grade of metal.
  • Weighs and add any required alloys to heat.
  • Takes C.E. readings.
  • Reads the pouring schedule for special instructions and alloy additions.
  • Removes slag per procedure.
  • Monitors melt closely to avoid bridging.
  • Taps out proper weight at required temperature.
  • Records each heat in furnace logs.
  • Maintains furnaces and ladles and all melt equipment.
  • Reports unsafe conditions to supervisor.
  • Maintains a clean and safe work area.

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or touch, talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift up to 40 lbs, and is frequently required to lift up to 75 lbs. The employee will also regularly lift more than 75 lbs with the assistance of an overhead crane. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Because of the nature and activity of this job, the employee must always be looking and listening in his work area.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The employee occasionally works in wet, humid conditions (non-weather), extreme heat conditions (non-weather), work near moving mechanical parts, toxic or caustic chemicals, has the risk of electrical shock, and works with explosives. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
