The Position

The Organ Utilization Coordinator (OUC) plays a critical role in maximizing the gift of life by managing the organ allocation process from start to finish. This position ensures regulatory compliance while coordinating communication between transplant centers, recovery teams, and internal staff to facilitate timely and efficient organ placement for transplant and research. The OUC oversees allocation logistics, including transportation arrangements and credential verification, and responds rapidly to import offers to minimize cold ischemic time and optimize outcomes. By maintaining deep knowledge of OPTN policy and collaborating across departments, this role drives operational excellence and supports Mid America Transplant’s mission to save lives through organ and tissue donation.

The position reports to the Director of Organ Utilization and provides the opportunity to collaborate with transplant centers as well as internal team members.

What You’ll Do

  • Ensure DonorNet documentation is completed per OPTN policy before beginning organ allocation
  • Communicates relevant donor and organ specific information to transplant centers
  • Coordinate multiple cases through the allocation process including coordination of any logistics related to the case.
  • Ensure that all organs are backed up, in compliance with OPTN Policy, with another transplant center in the event of late or intraoperative turn downs
  • Allocate organs and tissues for research, where appropriate
  • Verifies out of town recovery surgeon credentials in Association for Organ Procurement Organizations Credentialling Index (ACIN) and document in True North (TN)
  • Arrange ground transportation for all local and out of town recovery teams, when procurement times have been set.
  • Complete, accurate, and timely documentation of allocation process in TN
  • Coordinates import offers for thoracic and abdominal organs for local transplant centers
  • Responds to local transplant center coordinator within five minutes of notification that they are accepting an import organ.
  • Complete accurate and timely documentation
  • Coordinates all transportation logistics including air and ground transportation.

What You’ll Bring

  • Associate’s degree in health-related field or equivalent work experience
  • At least three years of experience in the medical field
  • Experience in customer-facing roles is beneficial
  • Familiar with standard laboratory values
  • Understanding of basic anatomy and physiology
  • Experience using and understanding medical terminology
  • Familiarity of the geographic layout of the United States
  • Solid understanding of descriptive statistics, including measures of central tendency, variation, distributions, and probability
  • Solid analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Exceptional organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple competing time-sensitive priorities effectively
  • Proven capacity to work independently while maintaining accountability and delivering results
  • The ability to work effectively in a team environment as well as independently while upholding core values of excellence, innovation, stewardship, collaboration, integrity, and compassion
