Position Summary:

The Project Manager, Custom Fermentation coordinates client-driven fermentation projects, acting as the bridge between external clients and internal teams. This role ensures requirements are clearly defined, information is gathered across departments, and timely updates are delivered to clients. The Project Manager works cross-functionally with fermentation, process development, quality, safety, supply chain, and business development teams to deliver on project objectives.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for assigned custom fermentation projects.
  • Collect, document, and clarify client requirements for accurate project planning.
  • Provide timely updates, data summaries, and presentations to clients.
  • Manage client expectations with transparent communication on scope, timelines, and results.
  • Partner with internal teams (fermentation, process development, quality, safety, supply chain, business development) to align on project deliverables.
  • Facilitate cross-functional meetings to review progress and maintain accountability.
  • Translate technical updates into clear, client-ready communications.
  • Develop and maintain project plans, including timelines, milestones, and deliverables.
  • Monitor progress, identify risks, and coordinate resolution across departments.
  • Ensure all documentation and outputs meet quality standards and client requirements.
  • Recommend and implement process improvements for project efficiency and communication.
  • Maintain accurate project records for compliance and audit purposes.
  • Track project budgets and report variances as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant regulatory, safety, and quality standards.


Additional Responsibilities:

  • Support business development activities as needed.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Participate in training and professional development.
  • Represent the company at industry events or client meetings as required.


Typical Work Environment:

  • Office and laboratory environments.
  • Occasional travel to client sites or manufacturing facilities.
  • May require use of PPE in laboratory or production areas.


Minimum Qualifications:

Education & Training:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Biotechnology, Microbiology, Bioprocess Engineering, or related field.


Relevant Experience:

  • 3–5 years in fermentation, process development, or biotech project management.
  • Experience leading cross-functional projects and teams.
  • Customer-facing experience in biotech, fermentation, or CDMO/CMO settings preferred.


Technical Skills:

  • Proficiency with project management tools (e.g., MS Project, Smartsheet, Asana).
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to translate technical concepts into client-facing communications.


Non-Technical Skills:

  • Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Adaptability and resilience.


Licenses/Certifications:

  • None required; PMP or similar certification preferred.


Physical & Safety Requirements:

  • Ability to work at a computer for extended periods.
  • Occasional standing or walking in laboratory or manufacturing environments.
  • Adherence to all company safety protocols and completion of required safety training.
  • Adherence to all food safety procedures as per FDA regulations, including the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) or any other applicable federal, state, or local food safety regulations.
