What are the responsibilities and job description for the Staff High Voltage Electrical Engineer position at MiconeStaffing?
Staff High Voltage Electrical Engineer (EPC) — Build the Backbone of American Clean Energy
Carson City, NV | Full-Time | $150,000 – $190,000
The Opportunity
Substations, transmission interconnections, grid-scale storage — if designing serious high voltage infrastructure is your thing, this is your role. Our client, a fast-growing clean energy innovator, is hiring a Staff High Voltage Electrical Engineer to lead the design of 69kV–345kV substations and serve as Engineer of Record on projects central to domestic clean energy production. You'll own design packages from first concept through commissioning.
Why You'll Love It
- Big-iron scope: Transmission-level substations, utility and ISO/RTO interconnections, and BESS integration
- Ownership, not oversight: Independent EOR authority on your projects
- Nevada advantage: No state income tax, and Carson City living minutes from Lake Tahoe
- Impact you can point to: Infrastructure that directly powers the energy transition
What You'll Do
- Lead design of high voltage AC systems — industrial substations (69kV–345kV) integrated with transmission lines and MV distribution
- Develop single-line diagrams, physical layouts, protection and control systems, relay coordination, and grounding plans
- Perform grid simulation and stability studies (PSSE, PSLF, PSCAD, ASPEN OneLiner) plus short circuit, load flow, and arc flash analysis
- Work directly with utilities and ISO/RTOs on interconnection studies, permitting, and compliance
- Develop SEL relay settings and select HV equipment — switchgear, breakers, transformers, reactors, PTs/CTs, protection relays
- Lead NEC, IEEE, NESC, and NFPA compliance reviews
- Support construction and commissioning with field engineering, testing, and troubleshooting
- Lead R&D into medium voltage DC distribution for BESS integration
- Manage scope, schedule, budget, and cost estimates across your design packages
- Mentor junior engineers and set team design standards
What You'll Bring
- BS/MS in Electrical Engineering (ABET)
- Active PE (Nevada or reciprocity-eligible); NV and SC licensure within 2 months of start
- 10 years of high voltage electrical design, EPC background preferred
- Advanced proficiency: PSSE/PSLF, PSCAD/EMTP, SEL AcSELerator, ASPEN OneLiner, ETAP/SKM, AutoCAD, Navisworks, Bluebeam
- Bonus points: HVDC/converter station design, SCADA/substation automation, field commissioning experience
- A passion for sustainability and building things that last
