Michigan Surgical Center is hiring a dependable, organized, and patient-focused Clerical Assistant / Authorization Specialist to join our team. This dual-role position is responsible for creating a welcoming experience at the front desk while also ensuring all prior authorizations and insurance verifications are completed before surgery.
Receptionist Responsibilities
- Greet patients, family members, and visitors in a friendly and courteous manner
- Act as an information liaison for patients, families, and guests
- Check in patients and distribute necessary materials
- Answer questions or refer patients to the appropriate staff
- Maintain patient confidentiality at all times
- Maintain and tidy the reception area, coffee station, and conference room
- Answer multi-line phones professionally and relay messages accurately
- Perform data entry and maintain accurate documentation
- Complete delegated administrative tasks such as copying, filing, word processing, and calling patients
- Participate in in-services and committee meetings as needed
- Perform other duties as assigned
Authorization Responsibilities
- Verify primary and secondary insurance coverage and enter accurate information
- Scrub the surgery schedule daily to confirm eligibility and fix errors
- Obtain and document all required prior authorizations and referrals
- Notify surgeon’s office and patient of any uncovered services
- Coordinate with surgeon offices on coverage issues or outstanding balances
- Inform patients of their financial responsibility prior to surgery
- Collaborate with the Business Office Manager on payment plans
- Attend insurance meetings or payer website trainings for updates
- Update internal process documentation as payer requirements change
- Assist with insurance-related patient questions and AR collections
- Assist with accounts receivable processes and follow up on accounts requiring further evaluation
Work Environment & Schedule
- Busy outpatient surgical setting
- Hours vary depending on surgery schedule (Monday–Thursday, 24 hours/week)
- No weekends
- Must be flexible and reliable, with ability to open facility when schedule

The Center is open Monday through Thursday & NO WEEKENDS, ON-CALL, or WORK ON STANDARD HOLIDAYS. Work hours for this position are Monday through Thursday, with shifts ranging from 5:45 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Start times may vary based on the surgical schedule.
