What are the responsibilities and job description for the Life and Academic-Success Coach / Counselor position at Michigan State University?
The Academic Programs Unit in the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) at Michigan State University (MSU) is looking to hire a full-time Life and Academic-Success Coach to provide support in a comprehensive life and academic-success coaching program for veterinary nursing and veterinary professional students. The life and academic success coach will work in collaboration with the Office of Academic Programs staff, faculty, and an external life coach. The life and academic success coach will take a coaching approach in their day-to-day work and while coaching students. The successful applicants will also assist in training faculty and peer coaches and academic support personnel, as well as recording and managing metrics to measure the program's success and plan, conduct and present scholarly work.
Characteristic Duties
- Provide coaching activities for veterinary nursing and veterinary professional students designed to foster the development of students' personal growth in life and academic success.
- Provides coaching in the areas of life and academic success.
- Identifies and builds resource libraries and fosters awareness of Michigan State University and other academic support resources and student counseling.
- Provide academic support activities through seminars, individual, and/or group coaching sessions.
- Meets with at-risk and other students to conduct gap analysis to guide students in creating a success plan, monitor student progress, and document coaching activities and progress.
- Meet with at-risk students, maintains regular communication with at-risk students and their faculty, and refers students to other academic or counseling resources as deemed appropriate.
- Provides orientation and support of faculty and peer coaches in using student success tools and strategies in the classroom, clinical, and laboratory settings.
- Provides workshops and seminars.
- Use metrics to measure the program's success.
- Conducts, scholarly work associated with the life and academic success coaching program.
- Interacts with a designated supervisor and other supervisors, directors, and staff in the Office of Academic Programs
- Interacts with students, staff, and faculty in the College of Veterinary Medicine to coordinate the life and academic success coaching program.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing one or two years of post- bachelor degree work such as a Masters in Counseling, or Psychology; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in counseling in a clinic/agency environment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The job also requires certification or licensing by the State of Michigan.
Desired Qualifications
Master’s degree or other postgraduate degree in education/learning, psychology, counseling, social work, kinesiology, or a closely related field; three years of accredited coaching experience working with undergraduate, professional, and/or graduate students.

Special Instructions
