Oversees and supervises the operational and personnel activities for the Kellogg Center Event department, including events at Kellogg Center, Spartan Stadium Tower, Breslin Student Events Center, Munn Ice Arena, and other campus locations. Assists with managing the Kellogg Center Event department to achieve optimal guest satisfaction and revenues. Assists with staffing, training, supervising, and counseling team members. Promotes complete guest and team member satisfaction. Strong focus on beverage operations during the academic year while assisting with food and beverage managerial coverage.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manages and oversees the set-up, service, and break down of all Kellogg Center events at Kellogg Center, Spartan Stadium Tower, Breslin Student Events Center, Munn Ice Arena, and other campus locations to ensure timeliness, accuracy, and quality guest service for all events.
  • Executes all Kellogg Center events by having a clear understanding of all the information on the Banquet Event Order (BEO). Shares all information with the staff by conducting pre-shift meetings, including any special requests or needs.
  • Manages beverage ordering, timing of deliveries, and proper rotation of stock.
  • Manages the delivery of food, beverage, and event supplies/equipment to on-campus venues using large box trucks
  • Communicates with the guests before, during, and after the function to ensure needs are met. Maintains high visibility with guests throughout event.
  • Ensures all service standards are maintained at the highest level. Confirms guest count during any meal function.
  • Monitors food presentation to ensure it is up to the highest Kellogg Center standards, reporting any discrepancies to the Chef on duty.
  • Trains staff on alcohol service standards and alcohol awareness. Understands and upholds all State and Local liquor laws. Maintains tight beverage controls.
  • Prepares and posts bills for all functions at the conclusion of the event. Confirm all cash is deposited in a proper and timely manner.
  • Manages food, beverage, and equipment supplies. Participate in inventories as directed by the Event Operations Manager.
  • Ensures all sanitation and cleaning schedules for various venues are followed. Conducts regular walk-throughs to ensure storage areas and equipment are neat, clean, and orderly. Maintains all equipment thru regular cleaning and repair. Ensure opening and closing checklists are used.
  • Hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates all event service staff.
  • Interacts with all staff in a positive and professional manner to promote teamwork and a positive work environment. Actively seeks opportunities to resolve employee problems and monitor to ensure resolution.
  • Ensures compliance to all Kellogg Center Standard Operating Procedures and all other MSU/Student Life & Engagement (SLE) policies and procedures.
  • Follows proper accounting procedures, including purchasing and requisition procedures, cash, and credit policies.
  • Understands and follows all MSU Human Resource policies and procedures as it pertains to hiring, training, evaluating, and disciplining team members.
  • Contributes to the departmental profit/revenues and financial success of Kellogg Center Events through effective use of forecast data, proper scheduling, and responding to business fluctuations.
  • Monitors various payroll and financial reports on a regular basis.
  • Ensures all event staff are in proper uniform and maintain a professional appearance.
  • Follows all Kellogg Center safety guidelines to ensure a safe work experience, being knowledgeable of all fire exits, fire extinguisher locations, and safety rules. Ensures all event team members follow safety guidelines.
  • Conducts oneself in professional manner at all times, following the MSU Rules Governing Personal Conduct of Employees.
  • Assists Event Operations Manager with various projects and tasks as assigned.
  • Negligible disagreeable working conditions. This job requires significant physical effort and involves moving throughout the operation, climbing, bending, reaching, and lifting over 75 pounds approximately 26-75% of the time.

All positions in SLE are designated as critical status. In the event of a university closure, modification, or suspension of operations due to snow or other emergency condition, you will be expected to make all reasonable attempts to report to work as scheduled for the duration of the closure/suspension. If you have an approved remote work agreement to work a portion of your normally scheduled work hours remotely, you may be called upon to work on-site to serve the MSU community

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management; General Business; or a related field; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in banquet/catering service to include proper meal service techniques and protocol; special events and banquet services; food sanitation and safety procedures; alcoholic beverage service including application of State of Michigan sale and service regulations; food/beverage preparation and presentation; cost control and supervision; menu planning; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Hospitality Business, General Business, or a related field; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in banquet/catering service to include proper meal service techniques and protocol; special events and banquet services; food sanitation and safety procedures; alcoholic beverage service including application of State of Michigan sale and service regulations; food/beverage preparation and presentation; cost control and supervision; menu planning; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; possession of a valid Michigan driver license and satisfactory driving record; working knowledge and demonstrated ability to satisfactorily operate a single unit motor vehicle.

Previous experience managing events or beverage operations in a hotel, events or catering setting.
