Position Summary
Salary: $25.68 -$28.92 per hour- upon meeting the progression requirements. This is a trades development position intended to support the progression of an entry-level employee toward journey-level equivalency through the successful completion of trade-specific competency assessments and on-the-job experience within the assigned trade. Under the guidance of experienced staff, this role assists with the installation, repair, and replacement of both low- and steep-sloped roofing systems. Work includes a variety of materials such as tile, slate, shingles, metal, and hot, cold, and specialty roofing systems. Responsibilities also include assisting with the installation, repair, replacement, and troubleshooting of flashing systems, as well as supporting the evaluation and resolution of issues related to leaks, drainage, damp-proofing, and waterproofing. These evaluations may involve both conventional and non-destructive techniques, including epoxy injections. Additional duties include assisting with the cleaning, installation, repair, and replacement of gutters, downspouts, and sump systems. This position provides hands-on training in the safe and effective use of manual and powered roofing equipment, including shears, de-roofing tools, roofing saws, hot bitumen application equipment, grinders, caulking tools, hot kettles, fume recovery systems, and power hoists. Training is also provided in general rigging, as well as the safe setup and use of ladders, scaffolding, boom trucks, and similar equipment. Further development areas include interpreting blueprints, diagrams, sketches, and job specifications; requisitioning materials, equipment, and parts; and estimating time and material requirements for projects. Training also includes stocking and maintaining equipment. Operation of a university service vehicle as needed.
The Breakdown Of Job Responsibilities Is As Follows
20% - On the job learning of installation, repair or replacing low and steep slope roofing systems.
20% - On the job learning of installation, repair or replacing flashing systems.
20% - On the job learning of troubleshooting leakage, drainage and damp-proofing and waterproofing problems using conventional and non-destructive evaluation techniques including epoxy injections.
15% - On the job learning of cleaning, installing, repair or replacement of gutters, downspouts and sumps.
15% - On the job learning of Life Safety and general trade knowledge - PPE, tools, material and equipment.
10% - Related Instruction in the field of the roofing trade. Time tracking, customer communication, and correspondence through email, training sessions, meetings, and professional development activities.
This position will engage in high performing, leading edge practices, valuing people, partners and stewardship.

- Completion of a high school education and two years experience as a Trades Helper I or equivalency in Roofing experience; or an Associate's degree in a field related to roofing; or an equivalent combination of education, technical training and experience.
- Some knowledge of methods, materials, tools, equipment, occupational hazards, and safety precautions of the roofing trade.
- Possession of a valid Michigan vehicle operator's license; must drive a University vehicle to perform job duties of this classification;
- Must furnish own tools.
- Occasional to frequent lifting of more than 75 pounds.
- This position requires knowledge of basic personal computer terminology and operations and the ability to use e-mail and the Internet.
