Description

The Information Security Intern participates in a structured learning experience designed to provide hands-on exposure to cybersecurity, information security, risk management, and regulatory compliance within a financial services environment. Through guided observation, project participation, and practical application of classroom concepts, the intern develops knowledge of how information security programs protect organizational and member information. The internship provides opportunities to learn from experienced professionals while gaining real-world insight into cybersecurity operations, security governance, and risk management practices within a credit union.

This internship focuses more on the governance, oversight, and compliance side of a Information Security program rather than the operations.

The MSUFCU internship program is designed to support interns in developing career readiness competencies as defined by NACE. Throughout the internship program, interns will gain hands-on experience and enhance essential skills that prepare them for success and career growth. Interns will have the opportunity to develop competencies in career and self-development, communication, critical thinking, equity and inclusion, leadership, professionalism, teamwork, and technology.

Work Location: Hybrid; A combination of working from home/remotely and at MSUFCU Headquarters campus in East Lansing, MI.
Work Schedule: Part-Time 15-25 hours/week; Hours will be scheduled based on student's school schedule and business hours (8:30AM - 5:00PM Monday-Friday)
Paid Hourly Internship - $20.00 /hour dependent on experience
Duration: Fall Semester - Beginning August 26th (or similar date), with potential to continue into future semesters

An offer of employment with MSU Federal Credit Union and affiliates is contingent upon the agreed work arrangement (onsite/hybrid/remote) and work location. MSU Federal Credit Union may or may not be able to accommodate temporary or permanent changes to work arrangements or allow employment outside the city and/or state of residency in which the new hire resides at the time of offered employment.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Develop foundational knowledge of departmental operations, processes, and industry practices through training, observation, and hands-on learning opportunities.
  • Participate in Information Security team meetings as a full member of the team and actively participate in projects and assignments that provide practical experience applying academic concepts in a professional work environment.
  • Brainstorm security related topics and conduct research and analysis to support team initiatives, identify trends, and contribute recommendations or insights.
  • Assist with documentation, reporting, and process activities to gain an understanding of organizational standards, procedures, and best practices.
  • Collaborate with team members and cross-functional partners to learn how different business areas work together to achieve organizational objectives.
  • Attend meetings, training sessions, and developmental activities to expand knowledge of professional practices, business operations, and industry trends.
  • Observe and support problem-solving efforts by gathering information, evaluating options, and contributing to solutions under guidance from experienced professionals.
  • Apply and strengthen professional skills including communication, teamwork, critical thinking, organization, adaptability, and time management through daily work experiences.
  • Understand the Credit Union's policies and procedures to ensure compliance and accountability for managing operational risks. Adhere to established internal controls and procedures to safeguard assets, prevent fraud, and maintain the integrity of credit union operations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Job Requirements:

  • High school diploma required.
  • Actively pursuing a degree in Cybersecurity, Information Security, Information Technology, Risk Management, Business Technology, or a related field

Physical Demands & Work Environment:

  • May be required to remain in a stationary position for an extended period.
  • Ability to operate standard office technology, equipment, and tools, which may include many hours of computer and phone usage.
  • Occasionally needs to move about inside of an office area.
  • Exposure to potentially hazardous condition, i.e. robbery. Receives detailed instructions and procedures to be followed to minimize the exposure.
  • This position can work in hybrid or onsite working arrangements.
