Job Summary

The Safety Rep Intermediate provides operational and administrative occupational safety and environmental health support within Safety Management Services. This role supports regulatory compliance, Environment of Care programs, and safety service delivery across Michigan Medicine facilities. The position is essential to sustaining a safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors as the organization continues to expand.

Responsibilities*

  • Triage departmental safety inquiries and service requests.
  • Plans and administers training programs in accident and waste management and other employee safety procedures.
  • Prepares and distributes educational materials and information, audits company facilities, and recommends actions for the correction of hazardous situations for compliance with OSHA regulations.
  • Compiles and submits required OSHA accident reports.
  • Coordinate compliance with occupational safety and environmental health regulations.
  • Support Environment of Care programs, including Hazardous Materials and Waste Management.
  • Assist with facility-focused safety inspections and data collection.
  • Assist with procurement, review, and coordination of contracts, permits, and service agreements.
  • Serve as Program Lead for the UMH Prescription Safety Glasses Program.
  • Maintain Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) and chemical inventories.
  • Respond to staff inquiries related to safety, health, and environmental concerns.
  • Participate in emergency response activities as assigned.


Customers And Stakeholders

  • Primary customers include patients, visitors, clinicians, non-clinical staff, facilities managers, facilities operations teams, project managers, and skilled trades.


Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree in occupational safety, environmental health, industrial hygiene, or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 2-5 years of professional experience supporting safety, environmental health, or regulatory compliance programs.
  • Working knowledge of occupational safety and environmental health regulations.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across departments.


Desired Qualifications*

  • Healthcare or large institutional environment experience.
  • Experience with hazardous materials management or SDS systems.

Modes of Work

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third-party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
