Application Requirements

Applications are due by December 23, 2025 and will be reviewed on a rolling basis. A subset of applicants will be invited to conduct a Zoom interview; from that group, a select number will be invited for in-person interviews and a job talk. In-person interviews are planned to be completed by the end of 2025. Applicants should send the following materials:

  • Curriculum vitae: this should include information on the applicants education and training, publications, funding, presentations at conferences, teaching and mentoring activities, media coverage, and service activities (e.g., local or national committee work, serving as a peer reviewer for journals).
  • Cover letter (2 page maximum, single-spaced, 12-point font). The cover letter should include information on:
  • The reasons for the applicant's interest in joining the CHEAR Center
  • The applicant's research focus to date and planned research agenda as a faculty member
  • The applicant's plans for pursuing independent funding in their first 2-3 years as a faculty member.

Job Summary

The Susan B. Meister Child Health Evaluation and Research (CHEAR) Center in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Michigan Medical School is seeking applications for a full-time, research-focused faculty position at the Research Assistant Professor level. The planned activities for this position relate to applying methods of economic evaluation and decision sciences to questions in child health policy. The applicant will contribute to a series of economic survey studies focuses on understanding public and parent preferences toward vaccination as well as modeling studies evaluating the cost-effectiveness of vaccination and other prevention programs. The applicant will also lead grant applications, author peer-reviewed publications, and present at national meetings to advance the science of child health outcome measurement, including quality of life, as well as to advance understanding of how best to enhance clinician and patient decision-making, particularly in the perinatal setting. The applicant will play an active role in teaching and mentoring CHEAR fellows as well as other students and trainees.

The CHEAR Center is one of the largest centers in the U.S. that focuses on pediatric health services and health outcomes research. Our team includes general pediatricians, pediatric subspecialists, economists, epidemiologists, and research scientists. Areas of expertise include but are not limited to the care of children with chronic conditions, pediatric health care utilization and spending, immunizations, Medicaid policy, and health equity. Key strengths of the CHEAR Center include an interdisciplinary and collaborative environment, national reputation, strong administrative support, excellent research staff, longstanding relationships with the State of Michigan, and access to a broad range of administrative databases. Moreover, the CHEAR Center has access to the resources of the Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation, which unites over 700 faculty across the University of Michigan conducing health care research. The CHEAR Center and the University of Michigan are in Ann Arbor, which is consistently rated as one of the best places to live in the U.S. by media outlets.

Position Overview

  • Appointment: Full-time position at Research Assistant Professor level.
  • Effort Distribution: 100% protected time for research and scholarly activity for 2 years

Required Qualifications*

Qualifications

  • Doctoral training in health policy or related field
  • Expertise in decision science methods, including discrete choice experiments, utility elicitation, and cost-effectiveness
  • Demonstrated interest or experience in pediatric health services or outcomes research
  • Strong potential for developing an independent research portfolio
  • Expertise and interest in the measurement of patient preferences towards immunizations, the development of pediatric quality of life measures, and enhancing decision-making in the perinatal setting.
