Responsibilities*

  • Coordination and care of pediatric neurosurgery and pediatric PMR patients within ambulatory care
  • Position will support, and administer intrathecal baclofen pump patient population to include patient education, scheduling and maintaining compliance in care, and triage of patients with symptoms.
  • Nurse will triage, in-basket management, authorizations, patient education and clinic support.
  • Nurse must perform duties independently, be highly motivated and flexible to address the needs of patients and their families.
  • Become familiar with internal and external resources for clinical assessment, decision making, and care management.
  • Provide nursing care to all pediatric patients and families in the neurology and rehab service.
  • Provide nursing care in collaboration with Physicians, other disciplines, and department colleagues for patients in clinic and via telephone to support efficient and effective management of patients, in a professional manner.
  • Participate in the coordination of care, including but not limited to testing, medication management, collaborative planning of care, support of self-management by patients/families, management of emergency situations, etc.
  • Provide patient and family education e.g., self-injection, medication management, pre-procedure and post-procedure care, etc.
  • Function as a Patient Liaison for the neurosurgery and rehab services to help coordinate visits for patients, help determine the service to best meet the patient's needs, and triage for same day/next day urgent visits.
  • Provide accurate and timely documentation of nursing care using an electronic medical record (MiChart).
  • Participate in quality improvement and LEAN thinking to improve workflow and processes.
  • May provide support of clinic functions in collaboration with other clinic support staff.
  • Provide nursing care for this patient population wherever neurosurgery and rehab services are provided.


Required Qualifications*

  • Current license to practice as a registered nurse in the State of Michigan.
  • Bachelors degree in Nursing OR Associates degree/diploma in Nursing along with a Masters degree in Nursing
  • Three (3) years, within the past 5 years experience as a registered nurse providing direct nursing care to pediatric rehab and/or neurosurgery patients.
  • NOTE: Required qualifications must be met by the candidate in order to be interviewed and considered for the position.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Experience with tele-health management within the past 3 years
  • At least 1 year of ambulatory care experience, within the past 3 years.
  • Intrathecal pump experience within the past 3 years
  • Clinical certification in a nursing specialty
  • Demonstrates familiarity with pediatric rehab and neurosurgery patient populations
  • Experience with development of patient education materials and/or nursing protocols.
  • Demonstrated excellence in communication skills; both verbal and written.
  • Demonstrated customer service skills and ability with conflict management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team, prioritize duties, multi-task and problem solve with minimal supervision.

  • Hourly range for RSAM Competent, Registered Nurses $43.10-$67.03/ hour
  • Evening Shift Differential-$3.00 / hour
  • Night Shift Differential- $4.00 / hour
  • Day Shift Weekend Differential- $2.90 / hour
  • Evening Shift Weekend Differential- $5.90 / hour
  • Night Shift Weekend Differential- $6.90 / hour
  • Charge Nurse Differential- $1.00 / hour

Salary & Nursing Framework Level

This UMPNC RN posting is posted under the Role-Specific Advancement Model (RSAM) as:

CCC- COMPETENT.

Actual RSAM LEVEL and salary will be determined at time of hire.

RSAM levels range from CCC-COMPETENT to CCC-EXPERT TO CCC-MASTERY.

Modes of Work

Work Schedule

  • Hours: 40 hours per week
  • Shift/Hours/Days: Monday ? Friday; dayshift with flexibility required to meet the business need
  • Location: Pediatric Rehabilitation Center, Ann Arbor, Mi ? however potential to support patient needs within all locations of pediatric neurosurgery and pediatric PMR


Note: All new employees will be expected to float to a designated unit(s) in times of low census.

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Michigan Nurses Association and the U-M Professional Nurse Council union, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
