Job Summary

The Department of Psychiatry at the University of Michigan is seeking a full-time clinical-track faculty member, trained in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, to work within Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Hospital Services. The U-M Department of Psychiatry involves over 170 faculty across a broad array of areas including robust research programs, busy general and subspecialized clinical programs, as well as clinical and research training opportunities. The ideal candidate for this position will focus on provision of high-quality clinical care and education in a highly multidisciplinary hospital-based setting. The candidate may work across multiple environments including inpatient, consultation-liaison, emergency, and/or partial hospitalization services. The candidate will share in teaching responsibilities of medical learners including medical students, house officers, and clinical fellows, as well as have the opportunity to supervise and teach trainees in other departments.

  • Participate in or lead quality improvement and research efforts
  • Provide mentorship, didactic teaching, and engage in patient care activities with learners in related disciplines including social work, advanced practice providers, psychology, and pharmacy.

Description of Inpatient Service areas

Inpatient

  • Embedded within C.S. Mott Children's Hospital is a 16-bed Child/Adolescent Psychiatry Hospital, the Nyman Unit for Child and Adolescent Mental Health and Wellness. This unit has a 13-bed general milieu and a 3-bed sub-unit for youth with behavioral dysregulation or significant needs related to activities of daily living.
  • The unit is unique in that it can see youth with medical comorbidities, can provide electroconvulsive therapy and can see youth with significant agitation or aggression in a safe and secure environment.
  • The service is composed of two teams, each run by a faculty member, with strong interdisciplinary collaboration including nursing, social work, activity therapists, learning specialists, and a BCBA.


Consultation-Liaison

  • The Consultation-Liaison Service serves the 298-bed C.S. Mott Children's Hospital by providing approximately 12- initial consult requests and approximately 300-400 follow-up consultations per month.
  • The Consultation-Liaison Service has dedicated social work, behavioral nursing, and nurse practitioner support, as well as regular involvement of a Child Psychiatry fellow and several trainees in Pediatrics and Psychiatry.
  • The Consultation-Liaison Service also provides coverage for consultations in the Children's Emergency Service, a busy Pediatric Level 1 Emergency Department seeing over 40,000 ED visits per year in close collaboration with the Psychiatry Emergency Service at the University Hospital, which sees individuals across the age continuum in that space.


Partial Hospitalization Program

  • Intensive day-based program for adolescents with depression, anxiety, suicide risk, trauma, ADHD, and other behavioral health challenges utilizing DBT and CBT based programming.
  • It provides a higher level of care than traditional outpatient services without requiring full hospitalization utilizing therapeutic and educational services in a dedicated facility with therapy rooms, a group activity space, and an outdoor garden.
  • The two-faculty service supports a census of 12 patients with the intent to grow to a future census of 16-20 patients with a strong interprofessional team composed of psychology, social work, nursing, nurse practitioners, and learning specialists.


Required Qualifications*

Applicants must hold an M.D. or equivalent degree, be board certified or board eligible in Psychiatry and Neurology and must hold or be eligible for a Michigan medical license. Evidence of clinical competence and competence in clinical and didactic teaching is expected. Applicants must have demonstrated promise for an academic career that emphasizes clinical care, teaching, and administration. Superior clinical competencies and master teacher skills are necessary and be an active member in good standing of the University of Michigan Medical Staff. Comfort with providing mental health care to patients with significant physical health or developmental needs is necessary.
