Job Summary

Basic Function and Responsibility: To recognize, evaluate, screen and treat orthopedic and sport disabilities and injuries; to provide emergency medical care, and to develop or restore function through therapeutic treatments as prescribed or directed by a physician.

We are currently seeking a licensed Athletic Trainer to join our interdisciplinary MedSport Sports Medicine team. This position will support duties as assigned within our athletic training service agreements and will provide direct patient care at one of our MedSport Physical Therapy Clinics. The athletic trainer will be responsible for daily practice and event coverage which will include late evenings and weekends as needed.

Physical Requirement: This position requires extensive standing/walking, as well as lifting, positioning, pushing, and/or transferring of patients.

Responsibilities*

  • Deliver direct patient care with a team approach in conjunction with a physician, physical therapist, athletic trainer, and assistive personnel.
  • Apply strapping, bandaging, or bracing designed to prevent or protect athletes against injury.
  • Administer therapeutic techniques and modalities such as ultrasound, electrostimulation, hydrotherapy, cryotherapy, as well as active, passive, and assistive exercises.
  • Perform preliminary evaluations, screen injuries, and refer individuals to physicians.
  • Assist in the development of rehabilitation programs independently or with other allied health care clinicians.
  • Administer first aid to injured athletes.
  • Assist in the development of conditioning programs.
  • Assist in the training/education of students who are in the athletic training fellowship/internship program.
  • Process patient care orders using the electronic ordering system may be required in certain areas.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications*

  • A bachelor's degree in athletic training or related health field or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Current licensure or eligible to apply as an Athletic Trainer in the State of Michigan.
  • This classification requires Primary Source Verification.


Desired Qualifications*

  • A master's degree in athletic training or a related health field or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • NATA BOC certification in athletic training.
  • Currently holds AHA/BLS CPR certification.
  • Candidates must be able to sit, stand, stoop, kneel, squat, walk, and lift objects up to 100#.

Modes of Work

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the United Michigan Medicine Allied Professionals (UMMAP), which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third-party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.

In addition to the screenings indicated above under Michigan law, a criminal history check including fingerprinting is required as a condition of transfer or employment for this position.
