Role Description
This is an on-site contract role for a Sign Language Interpreter located in Paw Paw, MI. The primary responsibility is to facilitate communication between deaf or hard-of-hearing students and others, which includes interpreting spoken language into American Sign Language (ASL) and vice versa. Additional duties include promoting effective communication in classroom settings, supporting accessibility for students in various school activities, and ensuring cultural sensitivity while interpreting.
Qualifications
- Proficiency in Sign Language and interpreting spoken communication into American Sign Language (ASL)
- Strong understanding of Deaf Culture and the principles of professional interpreting services
- Proficient verbal and nonverbal communication skills to support clear interpretation
- Ability to effectively translate written materials into ASL and English
- Familiarity with educational settings and the ability to adapt to diverse age groups
- National certification (e.g., EIPA, RID or equivalent) required
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field or relevant professional experience is an asset
- Commitment to ethical standards and cultural competence in interpreting
