What are the responsibilities and job description for the Visitor Services Assistant position at Michigan History Museum?
The Michigan History Museum is an agency of the State of Michigan. We serve over 75,000 visitors a year, many of them 3rd and 4th graders. Staff members will work as a team to efficiently and accurately expedite visitors through the museum admissions process and receive merchandise and process sales for the Museum Store.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Be friendly, warm and approachable as visitors enter and exit the Museum. Proactively enhance the visitor experience through excellent customer service.
- Act as cashier for Museum admissions: process school groups from September to June, ensure that visitors receive information about admissions, activities, programs, and events.
- Answer main phone line, direct calls and provide accurate and current information regarding exhibits, programs and events.
- Act as cashier for the Museum store. Process and price incoming merchandise, stock and maintain a clean and attractive store.
- Accurate cash handling and reconciliation.
- Creative problem solving and resolution of visitor issues.
- Perform a combination of clerical tasks to support administrative operations.
- Additional duties as assigned in support of the mission of the Museum.

WORK SCHEDULE:
The Museum has a variety of shifts available daily. A weekend shift may be required. Candidates must be able to start by and be available on August 31 to attend an all-day staff training.
Once assigned, shifts do not change. Because of the set schedule, staff should maintain the ability to work the shifts they have selected. Hours are limited to a maximum of 29.9 per week and 1040 per calendar year, approximately 20 hours per week. Candidates must be able to work at least 2 days a week to be considered and must be available for the entire shift they select when hired. Preference will be given to candidates that can work close to 20 hours a week and who have retail (including back-end POS and receiving experience) or professional office or hospitality experience. A pre-employment drug test and background check are required.
