Position Details

Job Title: Supervisor of Special Education/Principal of the COOR Education Center

Full-Year, Non-Union Contract

Department: Special Education Department

Reports To: Director of Special Education

Qualifications:

  • Possesses full approval as a supervisor of special education or the ability to obtain full approval as stated in the MARSE (R340.1772) (1)
  • Temporary approval as a supervisor of special education requirements as stated in the MARSE (R340.1772) (3)
  • A demonstrated ability to work successfully with parents.
  • The ability to deal with conflict in constructive ways.
  • Well organized
  • Good listener who communicates well both orally and in written form.
  • Positive attitude about the capabilities of individuals with disabilities.
  • Able to lead, facilitate, and / or delegate team meetings and group work.
  • Familiarity with IDEA and the Michigan Administrative Rules of Special Education
  • Certified in CPI, CPR and First AId and / or able to earn and maintain the certifications
  • Valid Michigan Driver’s License

The Supervisor of Special Education/Principal of the COOR Education Center shall have responsibilities which include but are not limited to the following:

  • Serve as the instructional leader, supervising and supporting all programming at COOR Education Center (CEC).
  • Work with local school district personnel to maintain consistent processes for student enrollment in the CEC program.
  • Review teacher plans/performance to ensure that all elements of the curriculum are taught in an environment where all students experience success.
  • Establish school processes and consistent routines that engage teachers/staff, monitoring of student progress and evaluation practices, interventions and improvement of instruction that meet the individualized needs of students.
  • Administer the master agreements for professional staff, paraprofessional staff, and support staff who work at the CEC and additional staff within the special education department as assigned by the Director of Special Education.
  • Arrange and facilitate professional learning for CEC teachers and staff
  • Recommend to the Director of Special Education on issues related to staff hiring, staff retention, staff assignments, personnel policies, staff discipline, etc.
  • Evaluate CEC staff in accordance with state laws and district personnel evaluation policies.
  • Assist in the development and implement a budget for the programs and services of the CEC.
  • Work with the Director of Transportation to coordinate the transportation for students attending COOR ISD operated programs.
  • Coordinate public relations for programs under their supervision.
  • Serve as the district’s administrative representative at IEP team meetings for students served by the staff at the CEC.
  • Develop and coordinate curriculum for programs at the CEC.
  • Coordinate the state testing for students at the CEC.
  • Communicate pertinent information to staff in an organized and timely fashion.
  • Coordinate the use of all behavior management methods and plans in the CEC programs.
  • Assist the director with program evaluations.
  • Assist the McKinney-Vento Program Liaison for the CEC.
  • Act as a liaison between the COOR ISD and Community Mental Health for CEC students.
  • Complete all administrative reporting requirements as outlined by MDE.
  • Participate in COOR ISD administration meetings and monthly board meetings.
  • Active member in state Special Education associations
  • Carry out other administrative duties as assigned by the Director of Special Education.

Duties of The Supervisor of Special Education/CEC Principal Include but are not limited to:

Instructional Leadership

  • Identify curricular needs
  • Choose and implement curriculum program
  • Analyze budget decision with relation to curriculum and other CEC activities
  • Organize professional development for all CEC staff (teachers, para-educators, support staff, and others as indicated by the Director of Special Education)
  • Stay current with legislative change (state and federal)
  • Align curriculum throughout program
  • Ensure all state assessment requirements are met

Staff Development

  • Identify building and individual staff needs
  • Direct staff professional development
  • Provide staff professional development
  • Staff evaluation
  • Develop Individual Development Plans for new and ineffective employees
  • Coordinate mentor program for new employees
  • Provide orientation for new employees
  • Assist Director of Special Education in monitoring and approving Professional Development requests and budgets

Program Development

  • Monitor the efficiency and appropriateness of staff placement
  • Create and adjust class lists
  • Project future needs of program classroom and services
  • Identify strengths and weaknesses of current programming and adjust when needed
  • Recognize systemic impact of program modifications
  • Complete School Improvement requirements
  • Engage staff in School Improvement process
  • Create Program Calendar

IEP Development and Implementation

  • Ensure IEPs are compliant and timely
  • Coordinate schedule for IEP writing (11-month IEPs)
  • Review draft IEPs
  • Coach teacher with IEP development
  • Assist with data analysis
  • Review progress reports
  • Ensure availability of resources for IEP implementation
  • Verify Itinerant Service schedule and delivery

Communication

  • Regularly communicate with parents

o Welcome letters

o School events

o Medical alerts

o Student Issues

o Emergencies

  • Coordinate services with agencies
  • Collaborate with local district personnel (administration and teaching staff)
  • Provide input and feedback to director of special education
  • Effective, regular communication with staff

Building and Grounds

Assist the Director of Maintenance and Grounds Supervisor

  • Approve and monitor building maintenance requests
  • Ensure building and grounds are safe and secure
  • Identify and create strategic building maintenance plan
  • Coordinate building work with outside vendors
  • Supervise custodial and maintenance staff
  • Create summer work and maintenance task list

Other

  • Create safety drill schedule and ensure follow-up is recorded
  • Monitor Worksheet B completion (student count)
  • Ensure completion of MSDS reporting (student count)
  • Ensure completion of TSDL reporting
  • Assist in overseeing program budget
  • Participate in contract negotiations for teachers and support staff
  • Active membership in state associations (i.e., MAASE)

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $9.87 – $41.11 per hour
