Schedule: 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Monday – Friday

Job Summary:
The Assistant Principal is responsible for assisting the principal in the administration, supervision and implementation of instructional programs and support services for students attending the Education and Transition Centers. Assist with supervision, discipline, course scheduling, coordination of activities, evaluation of staff, and promoting a positive learning climate. Serve as the administrator in charge in the absence of the principal.

Essential Duties:
- Develop, implement and maintain an appropriate curriculum to foster maximum educational opportunity and independence for students with autism, cognitive, and physical impairments.
- Assist in the design, implementation and maintenance of programs and services which provide appropriate educational opportunities in the least restrictive settings.
- Interview and train staff.
- Supervise and evaluate professional and paraprofessional staff assigned to the program.
- Develop and sustain communication within the program that will promote appropriate work relationships and positive staff morale.
- Work with staff to establish strong community connections to increase work-based opportunities for students and adults, ages 16-26.
- Build and operate innovative systems of support (i.e. staff schedules and student information systems).
- Implement instructional best practices that meet the developmental, behavioral and individualized needs of all students.
- Build relationships and work with students, families, staff, and administration in a positive and effective manner.
- Collaborate with outside agencies to provide wrap around support.
- Maintain professional skills and provide educational leadership for program staff.
- Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s polices and applicable laws.
- Maintain school safety and health regulations in accordance with district, state and national policies, procedures, and laws.
- Regular, predictable in-person attendance.
- Adherence to work rules; following MCISD Policies and Guidelines.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
- Assume other duties as assigned by the Assistant Superintendent for Special Education.
Qualifications:
Education:
- Master’s degree in Special Education or related field, required.
Certification:
- Valid Michigan Administrator Certification or be enrolled in a program leading to certification as a school administrator not later than 6 months after employment begins.
Approval:
- State of Michigan approval in at least one area of Special Education, required.
- State of Michigan approval as a Supervisor of Special Education, or ability to obtain same, required.
Experience:
- At least five (5) years’ Special Education experience.
- Three years supervisory experience, preferred.
- An appreciation of and experience in supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Experience working in diverse environments.
- Strong Understanding of the laws and evidence-based practices relating to Special Education Restorative Practices, Multi-tiered System of Supports (MTSS), Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS), High Leverage Practices and school management and operations.
Skills/Other:
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Data collection, interpretation, and analysis in support of school improvement processes supporting increased academic, behavioral, and social-emotional success of students and adults, ages 18-26.
- High-energy, well-organized, creative thinker, and a flexible team player with excellent administrative skills.
