Job Description
- Lead substation physical design (AIS and GIS) from concept through IFC packages
- Develop general arrangement, elevation, section, grounding, and equipment layout drawings
- Design bus configurations, station service, conduit systems, and cable routing
- Perform equipment sizing and coordinate technical specifications for major substation equipment
- Collaborate with protection & controls engineers for one-line and three-line integration
- Coordinate with civil engineers on grading, drainage, and foundation design
- Ensure compliance with utility standards, NESC, IEEE, and client-specific requirements (including BPA standards)
- Conduct design reviews, QA/QC, and support construction during execution and commissioning
- Interface directly with utility clients and support field engineering as needed
- Substation expansion tied to new transmission line and battery storage integration
- Breaker replacements, capacity upgrades, and relay coordination improvements
- New substations supporting wind, solar, and battery energy storage systems (BESS)
The Successful Applicant
A Successful Substation Engineer Should Have
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (or related discipline)
- 8-15 years of substation engineering experience
- Strong experience in AIS and/or GIS substation design
- Proficiency in substation design tools (e.g., AutoCAD, MicroStation, or equivalent)
- Solid understanding of utility transmission systems (69kV-500kV)
- Experience working with utility standards and design packages
- PE license (or ability to obtain)
- Experience with BPA, PUDs, or investor-owned utility projects
- Exposure to renewable interconnection and BESS projects
