Chief Estimator - Commercial Construction - Mobile, AL

Excellent opportunity for a skilled Estimator to launch their career forward by taking ownership of Preconstruction for a growing commercial general contractor based in Mobile, AL.

Short-term, this role involves leading the company's estimating as they redirect their Project Managers, becoming more efficient. Long-term, this role will build a preconstruction team around them and Direct them accordingly.

This client has been in business for over 20 years, however they have remained a smaller General Contractor on purpose, maintaining a low overhead and high margin approach to projects. That being said, they have recently implemented a strategic growth plan allowing for additional project intake, and requiring the addition of driven industry professioals across the board.

With $40M in yearly revenue currently, and a goal of hitting $100M annually by 2030, they are bidding new work and project sizes and plan to scale the business to new heights.

Description

• Lead and manage the preparation of detailed cost estimates for construction projects.
• Analyze project plans, specifications, and other documentation to prepare comprehensive estimates.
• Collaborate with project managers, architects, and engineers to ensure accuracy and feasibility of estimates.
• Develop and maintain relationships with subcontractors, suppliers, and clients.
• Review and evaluate subcontractor bids for completeness and compliance with project requirements.
• Monitor and update cost databases to reflect current market trends and pricing.
• Provide mentorship and guidance to junior estimators and team members as company continues to scale
• Ensure all estimates are completed within deadlines and align with company objectives.

Profile

• 7-10 years of commercial estimating with a general contractor; strong hard-bid experience required, GMP and cost-plus preferred.
• Demonstrated ownership of an estimating function, not solely production estimating under someone else's process.
• Mastery of quantity takeoff and scope development across all CSI divisions.
• Proven implementation of estimate QA/QC, bid-day procedure, proposal leveling, and Basis of Estimate documentation.
• Working knowledge of schedule logic and how durations drive staffing and general conditions.
• Strong commercial literacy: bonds, insurance endorsements, permits and fees, liquidated damages, certified payroll.
• Excellent communication and negotiation; calm and decisive under bid-day pressure.
• Bachelor's degree in construction management, engineering, or architecture, or equivalent demonstrated experience.
• Proficiency with estimating and takeoff software and the ability to work within Gaillard's project and accounting platforms.
• Comfortable operating inside a defined operating system - weekly meeting cadence, quarterly priorities, published measurables, and being held to them.
• Willing to travel for pre-bid walks, subcontractor and vendor visits, and client presentations.

Desired Skills and Experience

Seeking an experienced Preconstruction professional capable of taking over and directing the full Estimating department for a 20-person commercial GC. Long-term, this individual will be growing an Estimating team and directing them accordantly.

Current backlog consists of $1M - $10M projects, both ground-up and renovation. They are also beginning to tackle larger individual projects including $20M warehouses.
