What are the responsibilities and job description for the Assembly Technician position at MICA Steelworks Inc?

JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for the fabrication, positioning, alignment, and fitting of the parts of structural steel products. The position will assemble both finished products and the pieces that go into them.The job of an assembler requires a range of knowledge and skills. Skilled assemblers put together complex structures. After determining how parts should connect, they use hand or power tools to trim, shim, cut, and make other adjustments to fit components together. Once the parts are properly aligned, they connect them with bolts and screws or weld or solder pieces together.

QUALIFICATIONS

1. Knowledge of steel structures shop operations preferred

2. Ability to study and interpret blueprints then assemble components per drawings

3. Experience in torquing and bolting up in assembly of steel structures

4. Ability to accurately read and understand a tape measure to the 1/32 of an inch

5. Work both independently and with a team in a high-volume, fast-paced environment

6. High School Diploma or GED equivalent

7. 1-2 years of previous experience in a fabrication/manufacturing environment

8. Ability to perform basic math computations

9. Must have a high awareness of safety at all times

10. Ability to read, write and speak English

11. Ability to follow written and verbal instruction

12. Must be a self-starter with excellent organizational skills

13. Must be able to follow deadlines and work under pressure

14. Must be a person of passion and integrity who has the drive to excel and delivery exceptional results

15. Successfully pass a background check, including criminal history, drug screen, physical, audiogram, and vision test.

Dexterity: Assembly technicians work with their hands, whether directly manipulating components or using controls on an assembly machine.

Math: Basic math is needed due to the technological needs of many fabrication plants.

Mechanical/Technical Skills: Assembly technicians need to be able to read and understand blueprints and manuals and work with computers, machines, and motion-control robots to do their job.

Strength: Assembly technicians require strength to lift heavy objects during the assembly process.

Stamina: Assembly technicians are on their feet for long periods of time, often doing repetitive motions.

Highly qualified candidates will also possess:

1. Two years of previous experience in a manufacturing or fabrication environment

2. Two years of previous experience with overhead crane operations

3. Two years previous experience operating a forklift

4. The ability to recognize hazardous substances and to know basic responsibilities for chemical safety.

5. Minimum of two years of experience using hand tools and power tools.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assemble parts according to visual aids
  • Listen to directions from supervisors
  • Determine if all parts are present
  • Read and interpret blueprints and sketches
  • Read parts list
  • Assemble tools and materials
  • Position parts and subassemblies by using templates or reading measurements
  • Verify specifications by measuring completed component
  • Ensure all parts are fitted and bolted in properly
  • Alter dimensions to fit specifications
  • Resolve assembly and production issues
  • Align parts or workpieces to ensure proper assembly
  • Maintains a safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations.
  • Conserves resources by using equipment and supplies as needed to accomplish job results
  • Proficiency in loading & unloading trucks
  • Position, align, fit, and weld parts to form complete units or subunits, following blueprints and layout specifications, and using jigs, welding torches, and hand tools
  • Verify conformance of workpieces to specifications, using squares, rulers, and measuring tapes
  • Lay out and examine workpieces to be processed to ensure that specifications are met
  • Align and fit parts according to specifications, using jacks, turnbuckles, wedges, drift pins, pry bars, and hammers
  • Lift or move materials and finished products, using large cranes
  • Study engineering drawings and blueprints to determine assembly requirements and task sequences
  • Move parts into position, manually or with hoists or cranes
  • Smooth workpiece edges and fix taps, tubes, and valves
  • Erect ladders and scaffolding to fit together large assemblies

WORKING CONDITIONS

1. 100% Shop

2. This position requires walking, sitting or standing to a significant degree and lifting up to 100 pounds

3. During the course of work, the incumbent will be subject to seasonal weather conditions

4. No travel is required for this position

5. Employee must wear proper attire at all times (i.e., steel-toe shoes, hard hat, etc.)

6. This position is not eligible for relocation benefits
