We are seeking to add an Appeals Manager to our Billing team in Columbia, SC. The Appeals Manager will lead the firm's strategy for reviewing and appealing client and carrier audit reductions to maximize recovery of billed revenue. This role oversees a specialized team responsible for evaluating audit cuts, preparing appeals and identifying trends that impact billing performance.
Ideal candidates will have 8–10 years of experience in legal billing, audit appeals, compliance, or related financial operations within a law firm or professional services environment, and experience managing a team. Experience in insurance defense or carrier-driven billing environments, preferably having worked on the insurance side of appeals, preferred. Experience working in Aderant and/or BillBlast is also a plus. Degree preferred but not required. We offer competitive pay and benefits. This position is eligible for a remote or hybrid work arrangement after training/integration with the team for 90 days. Ideal candidates will be based in the Carolinas.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the firm’s approach to reviewing and appealing client and carrier audit reductions.
- Oversee the preparation and submission of appeals to maximize recovery of billed revenue.
- Provide strategic oversight of complex, high-value, or escalated audit appeals.
- Monitor appeal outcomes and identify opportunities to improve recovery rates.
Billing Compliance Oversight
- Ensure compliance with client billing guidelines, carrier audit rules, and firm time entry standards.
- Identify recurring compliance issues and recommend solutions to reduce future audit reductions.
- Serve as a subject matter expert on billing compliance and audit trends.
Team Leadership & Development
- Manage and develop a team of appeals and compliance professionals.
- Provide guidance on appeal strategy, guideline interpretation, and issue resolution.
- Establish clear workflows, expectations, and training to support consistent performance.
Process Improvement & Operational Strategy
- Develop and maintain standard operating procedures related to audit appeals and billing compliance.
- Analyze audit results to identify trends and opportunities for process improvement.
- Partner with operational teams to address upstream billing issues and improve compliance practices.
Reporting & Analytics
- Prepare regular reporting for leadership on audit reductions, appeals activity, and revenue recovery.
- Track and analyze key metrics including appeal success rates, dollars recovered, and common audit reduction reasons.
- Utilize advanced Excel and data analysis tools to identify trends and present insights.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with Billing, eBilling, Collections, and Client Experience teams.
- Provide guidance to timekeepers and operational teams on billing practices that reduce audit exposure.
- Escalate significant compliance risks or trends to leadership.
Qualifications & Experience Required:
- 8–10 years of experience in legal billing, audit appeals, compliance, or related financial operations within a law firm or professional services environment.
- Experience working with insurance carrier billing guidelines and legal bill audits.
- Proven ability to analyze billing or audit trends and translate findings into actionable recommendations.
- Experience managing a team.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Advanced Excel or data analysis experience also a plus, as well as experience developing SOPs and leading process improvement initiatives.
