What are the responsibilities and job description for the Chemical Process Engineer position at MFG Chemical?
Turn New Chemistry Into Safe, Manufacturable Products
MFG Chemical is looking for a Chemical Process Engineer to play a key role in bringing new products from concept to commercial production.
Working closely with our R&D Chemists, Sales, Operations, and Process Safety teams, you’ll evaluate new products in our development pipeline and help answer one of the most important questions in chemical manufacturing:
Can we safely and practically manufacture this product within our existing plant capabilities?
This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer with chemical-industry experience who enjoys technical problem-solving, understands process hazards, and wants to be involved in the decisions that move new chemistry from the lab to pilot and ultimately into production.
You don't necessarily need “Chemical Process Engineer” as your current title. If you have an engineering background, chemical-industry experience, and understand the Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) process, we want to hear from you.
What You’ll Do
- Partner with R&D Chemists and Sales to evaluate new products and processes in the development pipeline.
- Review proposed chemistry, raw materials, reaction conditions, processing steps, and other technical information to assess manufacturing feasibility.
- Evaluate whether proposed products can be safely manufactured using MFG's existing reactors, equipment, and plant capabilities.
- Identify potential process-safety, chemical compatibility, equipment, environmental, quality, or operational concerns before a product advances.
- Participate in and support Process Hazard Analyses (PHA) and other risk-assessment activities associated with new products and processes.
- Work cross-functionally with R&D, Process Safety, Operations, EHS, Quality, Pilot, and other technical resources to resolve identified concerns.
- Determine when sufficient technical and safety information is available for a product to advance to pilot production and identify additional testing or evaluation when needed.
- Support pilot and initial production runs, evaluate results, troubleshoot issues, and help determine necessary adjustments.
- Participate in Management of Change (MOC), Pre-Startup Safety Reviews (PSSR), and other applicable process-safety activities.
- Document technical evaluations, identified risks, required actions, and product-readiness decisions.
- Help continuously improve MFG's process for evaluating and safely introducing new products into manufacturing.
What We’re Looking For
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering or a related engineering discipline; Chemical Engineering strongly preferred.
- Experience working in the chemical industry, including chemical manufacturing, specialty chemicals, process development, R&D support, process engineering, or a related technical environment.
- Working knowledge of the PHA process and the ability to effectively participate in multidisciplinary process-hazard reviews.
- Understanding of chemical process hazards and factors affecting safe manufacturing, including chemical compatibility, reaction hazards, temperature, pressure, heat generation/removal, and material handling.
- Ability to review proposed chemistry and process information and translate it into practical manufacturing considerations.
- Familiarity with batch chemical manufacturing equipment and operating conditions is preferred.
- Familiarity with OSHA Process Safety Management (PSM), MOC, and PSSR is preferred.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and technical decision-making skills.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively across R&D, Sales, Operations, Safety, Quality, and other technical functions.
- Comfortable working in office, laboratory, pilot, and chemical manufacturing environments.
Why Join MFG Chemical?
This isn't a role where you'll spend your day designing reactors or sitting behind a desk reviewing existing production data.
You'll be involved early in the new-product pipeline, helping determine whether promising new chemistry can safely move forward within our manufacturing capabilities. You'll work directly with the people developing, selling, evaluating, and ultimately manufacturing those products.
It's an opportunity to combine engineering, chemistry, process safety, manufacturing, and practical problem-solving while having a direct impact on which new products become part of MFG Chemical's commercial portfolio.
If you have chemical-industry experience and understand the PHA process—even if your current job title is different—we'd like to talk with you.
MFG Chemical does not accept unsolicited resumes from recruiters or third parties. We will not pay for any resume sent via recruiter unless we already have a signed agreement. MFG Chemical will not sponsor an employee and uses E-Verify as part of our onboarding process.
