What We're Looking For
Mezzo Market is seeking a passionate, organized, and hands-on Sous Chef to support daily kitchen operations and help deliver a creative, high-quality dining experience rooted in Mediterranean-inspired cuisine with Serbian influences. Our menu features scratch-made dishes, pizzas, grain bowls, sandwiches, brunch offerings, and weekly specials in a fast-paced neighborhood restaurant and market setting.
The Sous Chef will work closely with ownership and the Executive Chef to lead kitchen operations, maintain high standards of food quality and consistency, supervise staff, and manage prep and inventory. This role requires strong leadership, attention to detail, and the ability to thrive in a collaborative, fast-paced environment.
Responsibilities
- Assist in overseeing all back-of-house kitchen operations
- Work the line and supervise other kitchen staff
- Train line cooks, prep cooks, and kitchen staff (as needed)
- Ensure consistency, quality, and presentation of all menu items
- Assist with menu development, specials, and seasonal offerings
- Maintain proper food handling, sanitation, and kitchen safety procedures
- Manage prep lists, ordering, inventory, and food cost controls
- Coordinate efficient ticket flow during lunch, dinner, brunch, and catering service
- Help maintain staffing schedules and kitchen organization
- Ensure all dishes are prepared according to recipes and standards
- Support catering and private event execution as needed
- Foster a positive, professional, team-oriented kitchen culture
- 50 hours per week
Qualifications
- Minimum 3 years of kitchen leadership experience is required
- Prior experience as a Sous Chef or Kitchen Manager preferred
- Strong knowledge of Mediterranean, European, or scratch kitchen cooking techniques is a plus
- Ability to lead and motivate a team in a high-volume environment
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Understanding of food and labor cost management
- Ability to work nights and weekends is a must, including brunch service on Saturdays and Sundays
- ServSafe certification preferred
- Culinary school training is a plus but not required
