What are the responsibilities and job description for the CNC Machinist & Programmer - 2nd Shift position at Meyer Tool & Mfg., Inc.?
CNC Machinist & Programmer — 2nd Shift
Help Build Our New 2nd Shift
Location: Oak Lawn, Illinois
Shift: 2nd Shift, 4-Day Work Week | Monday–Thursday, 3:00 p.m. – 1:30 a.m. | Overtime as needed on Fridays
Pay: $20–$38/hr 2nd shift differential — based on skills, not just years:
- Developing Machinist (~$20–$25): runs jobs with support, building setup skills
- Machinist (~$26–$31): independent setups, tight-tolerance work
- Machinist Programmer / Lead (~$32–$38): CAM programming, multi-axis, mentors others
You don’t need to be a programmer to apply.
We’re launching a dedicated second shift to support continued growth, and we’re looking for CNC machinists at every level who want to build their skills. If you can run and inspect your own work — and you want to learn setups, CAM programming, and multi-axis machining — we’ll teach you the rest. Your pay grows as your skills do.
We Build Things That Change the World
For more than 56 years, Meyer Tool has manufactured precision components for national laboratories, aerospace programs, universities, and scientific research organizations. We don’t run thousands of identical production parts. Our machinists solve new manufacturing challenges every week, producing one-of-a-kind and short-run components for cryogenic, vacuum, pressure, and research applications. You’ll work closely with engineers, welders, inspectors, and fellow machinists to bring complex ideas to life.
You’ll Train on Day Shift First
Every second-shift hire starts on day shift (Monday–Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.), learning our parts and processes alongside our experienced machinists and engineers. You move to nights when you’re ready — not before.
What You’ll Do
From day one:
- Set up and operate CNC mills and lathes
- Read blueprints and hold tight tolerances
- Inspect your own work and stand behind it
- Troubleshoot tooling and machining challenges
As you grow:
- Program parts in Fusion 360 CAM
- Run 4- and 5-axis work
- Help coordinate shift priorities and mentor newer machinists
Equipment You’ll Work With
Hurco 5-Axis Mills, Hurco 3 & 4-Axis Mills, Hurco TMM10 Turning Center, Haas Mills & Lathes, G&L Horizontal Boring Mill, Manual Mills & Lathes, Bullard VTL
What We’re Looking For
Requirements:
- Hands-on CNC machining experience
- Blueprint reading
- Attention to quality — you inspect your own work
- Reliable, positive, team-first attitude
- Problem-solving mindset
Lead Preferences:
- Independent setups on mills and lathes
- GD&T proficiency and tight-tolerance inspection
- CAM programming (Fusion 360 preferred)
- Multi-axis machining
- High-mix, low-volume / job shop background
- Manual machining
- Mentoring or leadership experience
Experienced machinist programmers: the top of the range and the lead role are real — we’re building this shift around the right person.
